UNITED STATES PATENT Prien.
SAMUEL DARLING, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370.380I dated September 27, 1887.
Application filed July 1887. Serial No. 245,283. (No model To aZZ whom t may concern-.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL DARLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Pen Cleaner Sponge0ups,of which the following is aspecilication.
My invention consists in the improved construction of the cup, whereby the sponge is held for convenient use at one side of an annular chamber and can be readily changed to a new position in the said chamber for the purpose of cleansing and for presenting a fresh side of the sponge for wiping the pen.
The figure is a vertical section showing the position of the sponge at one side of the annular chamber.
In the accompanying drawing, A is the t sponge cup, preferably made of glass, and having its bottom a raised at the central portion of the cup and its rim b turned inward and downward, so as to form an annular chamber, B, which has a contracted annular opening, c, on the side of the chamber toward the central portion of the cup, as shown by the broken lines.
The sponge, C, preferably of globular form, is pressed within the annular chamber B at one side of the cup, and the surface of the sponge which projects above the surface ofthe water in thecup is used to wipe the pen.
Vhen it is desired to clean the sponge, it is to be drawn away from its seat in the ehamber Band conveyed through the water, D, to the opposite side of the annular chamber, and yagain pressed to a seat, thus washing the sponge and exposing a fresh surface for wiping the pen.
The adjacent Walls of theeontracted annular opening c serve to retain the sponge in the position in which it is placed, and it can be readily removed from one set position to another in the said chamber by means of the pen or the end of the pen-holder.
It is to be understood that the annular opening c may be contracted either by raising the central portion of the bottom a or depressing the rim b, or both, as preferred.
I claim as my invention--` 1. A pencleaner -spongecup having an annular chamber adapted to receive and hold a sponge at one side, as described, and which is provided with an annular contracted opening toward the central portion of the cup,sub stantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A pencleaner sponge cup having an annular chamber adapted to receive and hold a sponge at one side, as described, and having a centrally-raised bottom, which, with the rim, forms acontracted annular opening ou the side of the sponge-holding chamber toward the center of the cup, substantially as described.
l SAML. DARLING.
