Description

(N0 Model.)
H. H. JUDSON.
AMBULANCB.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
HORACE H. J UDSON OF STRATFORD, CONNEOTIOUI.
AMBULANCE.
SPECIl-ICATION forming part: of Letters Patent N0. 370.063, datec'l September 20, 1887.
Application filed June 17. 1887.
T0 all w7wm it ma.y concern:
Be it known that I, HORAOE H. J UDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing a.ta Stratford, in the county of Fairfield and Sbate 0f Connecticut, have invented eertain new and nsefnl Improvements in Sbretchers for Invalids; and I (10 hereby declare the following t0 be a full, elear, and exact deseription 0f the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the arb 150 which ib appertains t0 make and use be Same.
My invention has f01 its objecl: 130 produee a streteher for moving invalids 01 patients '00 be operated upon without; lifting them from the sheet, ib being 0f obvious importance that; such a (leviee be simple in eonstruction, 0f little cost, and easily managed. lt is 0f course weil nnderstood that; in all classes 0f serious illness or injury ib is frequently neeessary bhat; Lhe patienb should be lifted froxn Ehe bed. 'Ihis has in many cases had t0 be done by mein strength-that is, by lifting the patienb in Ehe armswhich in many cases canses intense Suffering 150 bhe patienb, and, in the case 0f adults, requires great physical strength 0n the parb 0f the person 0r persons lifbing the patient-.
The most importzant result: aceomplished by my invention is that; I am enabled t0 avoid all lifting 0f Ehe patienb by mein strengthand provide a simple means for moving the patienb withouta the necessiby of bis being lifted from the sheet upon Which he is lying. 'Ihis I accomplish by the simple and novel construction of which thefollowing deseription, in counection With the accompanying drawings, is a specification, numbers being used to indicate the seveml parts.
Figure 1 is a plan view illnstrating the several parbs 0f the stretcher detached; Fig. 2, 2b similar view illustrating the manner in which the stretcher is used, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section 0n the linex a; in Fig. 2.
My novel sbretcher consists 0f fonr parts and a supporting-piece, which may be the usual under sheeb of abed. Tl1e parts are two side strips, denoted by l, and t;wo holding-braces, denoted by 2. Thesupporting-pieceis denoted by 3. 'lhe side strips are made alike and may l0e 0f any desired form. I preferably make Ehe main portion angular, es ab 4, provicle ab each end reduced squared portions 5,which are en- Serial N0. 241,580. (N0 model.)
gaged by the braces, and also handles (i f0l eonvenienee in use. These side pieees may be made 0f mebal 01 w0od, but preferably 0f light streng wood. The braces are preferably made 0f mebal and bifurcated at their ends t0 enable them 150 engage the side pieces firmly. The braces may be made in a Single piece, if preferred; but I ordinarily make each br:1ce of two pieces and provicle a joint, 7, als the senter, made likea carriage-joint, es ab the left in Fig. 2, or else forma right and left: screw-bhreads, respecbively, ab the ends 0f bhe parts, which are eng-aged by corresponding t-hreads in a nnt, 8, as in Fig. l and ab the righb in Fig. 2.
The operation 0f rny improved stretcher is as follows, two persons only being required to move an adult from a bed wibh ease and Withoubjarring Ehe patienb: 'Ihe portions of Lhe sl1eel; ab the head and foot of Ehe bed are designated in the drawings by 3that is, the portions of the sheet th2it are orclinarily tucked around the mattress ab the head and foot 0f the bed. In using bhe stretcherthey are foldecl over, es shown in both figures. Euch 0f tahe side pieces is oben taken by bhe attendants 2blld rolled up in the sheet, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 und 3. As the side pieces am ordinarily made angular and Ehe sheet is (loubled overat both ends, 110 additional devices whatever are required 130 secure Ehe sheet t0 Lhe sidepieces. \Nhen Ehe sheet'has been rolled sufficientl y 011 both sicles, es in Fig. 2, the braees are placed in engagemenb with the portions 5 of Ehe side slarips, the et'fect of whieh is t0 hold the side pieces finnly, thereby making ofbhe side pieces,
braces, anti sheet a perfectly firm and stable tion shown in dotted lines '00 the posibion in 5 full lines. \Vhen the 1ight and lefb threacled nut is used. es ab the right, the nnt has to be turned suffieiently throw ont the two parts 0f the brace unbil the side pieces z1re eaused to hake up the slack in the sheet.
Having .thus described my invenbion, I claiml. A strebcher consisting of a supporbingdles 6,and ad justable braces bifurcat'ed ab their 10 piece,as a sheet, two side strips adapted to be ends, be parus of which are forced outward by rolled in the sheeb from opposihe sidesand ada righb and left1 Lhreaded nuta. juStable braees which engage the side stirips 130 l In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 5 hold them firmly and pressthexn oubward t o presence of 11w0 wibnesses.
take up bhe s1ack in the sheeb. y HORAOE H. J UDSON.
