CABINET FOR PAPER AND OTHER MATERIALS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,642, dated September 6, 1887.

Be 1t known that I, JAMES T. HoYT,a citizen of the United States,residing at New York, in

the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cabinets for Paper and other Materials, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates toacabinet or case for paper and other materials, as set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a section in the planeyy, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front view, partly in section, in the plane as 00, Fig. 1.

The case is made of metal or other suitable material, and consists'of a base, A, and a front, 0. By having a cover, B, suitably; hinged or applied,ready access can be had to the interior of the case, while at the same time the interior of the case can be protected. Attaching devices-such, for example, as eyes D enable the case to be secured in a convenient place. In the drawings is shown a package, E, consisting of sheets of sanitary paper placed within the cabinet. A suitable attaching device, F, holds the package E in place in the cabinet.

A simple form of attaching device F is shown in the drawings, where the attaching device is represented as consisting of a prong or arm passing through the sheets E, and bent over against the sheets E, as seen at F in Fig. 2. By providing the arm F with a hook or equivalent device, G, the arm F can be secured to the cabinet, while at the same time the arm F can be readily removed fromthe cabinet when said arm is to be provided with a fresh supply of sheets E, or when said arm is to be repaired or replaced by another arm or attaching device.

In the case or cabinet are mounted rollers M O. The rollers M O are connected, so as to revolve together. In the drawings said rollers are shown as being connected by pulleys R S, and by a cord or chain, Q. Of course other well-known devices-such, for example, as gear-wheels-can be used to connect the rollers M 0. By providing one of the rollers with a suitably-applied handle or finger-button, P, the rollers can be actuated from the exterior of the cabinet, the actuation of one roller, as already noted, imparting motion to the other roller. The sheets E are pressed against the rollers M O by a suitably-applied base, H. A spring, I, forces the base H in the proper direction to press the sheets E against the rollers M 0. By moving or revolving the rollers M O in the proper direction that one of the sheets E lying next to the rollers M 0 will be moved toward the outlet or exit opening N of the cabinet. When said sheet has passed some distance out through the opening N, said sheet can be grasped by the hand and drawn completely out of the cabinet. Such drawing out of said sheet imparts motion to the rollers M 0. As the inner end of said sheet passes out of contact with the roller M, said roller M comes into contact with the next succeeding sheet of the package E. The first-named sheet,con'tinuing to pass out of the cabinet,will cause revolution of the roller 0, and consequently of the roller M, even after said first-named sheet has passed out of contact with the roller M. butwhile said first-named sheet still remains in.cont act with the roller 0. Such revolution of the roller M causes the next succeeding sheet of the package E to travel toward the opening N a sufficient distance, so that when the first-named sheet has passed completely out of the cabinet the next succeeding sheet has advanced sufficiently far out through the opening N to enable such next succeeding sheet to be grasped by the hand and withdrawn from the cabinet. Sheet after sheet can thus be rapidly drawn out of the cabinet without its being necessary to actuate the handle 1? every time it is required to start a sheet moving out of the cabinet.

By providing the rollers M O with corrugations or roughened surfaces or with elastic materialsuch,for example, asindia'rubber the rollers M 0 will secure a sufficient grip upon or friction against the sheets E to move each sheet coming into contact with the rollers M 0 toward the exit-opening N.

. The base H is moved by the spring I toward the rollers M O as the package Edecreases in thickness in consequence of the withdrawal of sheets. The rollers M O can thus always engage one sheet resting upon the base H. Said base H is provided with arms J,n1oving inslots or ways L in the cabinet. Said-arms J are provided with screw-threads for the reception of nuts K. When a fresh package E is to be inserted into the cabinet,the base H is moved away from the rollers M O, and fixed in such position away from the rollers M O by screwing up or tightening the nuts K. The nuts or clamping devices K conveniently serve as handles for moving the base H away from the rollers M 0. When the base H is secured at a distance from the rollersM O, a package E can be readily inserted into the cabinet and placed upon or over the base H. The nuts K are then loosened, when the spring I, acting upon the base, moves said base, so that the package E is carried against the rollers M O.

The cabinet can be conveniently used for such material, for example, as sanitary paper, or in barber-shops to hold shaving-paper, or for holding other material-such, for example, as labels or wrapping-paper.

It must be remarked that this invention is an improvement on the cabinet described in my Patent No. 333,073, dated December 22, 18-85,and that bythe additional feed-roller,M, certain advantages are gained, as fully pointed out in the foregoing specification.

Heretofore a ticket-case has been composed of a receptacle for the tickets, having a front opening for their withdrawal singly, the bottom of the receptacle containing three pin or friction wheels geared together, all in such manner that on starting the apparatus the bottom ticketis placedhalf-way out. T0 withdraw a tic ket,the bottom one is drawn out and by its outward movement rotates the front pin or friction wheel, and thereby rotates the other two wheels, the pins or surfaces of which en- 40 gage with the underside of the second ticket, so that the same is partially pushed out to repeat the operation. This, however, is not my invention, and is not claimed by me.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a case 'or cabinet having an exit -opening, N, an attaching device, E, for holding a package of sheets of paper, and a spring-impelled base, H, for pressing the package forward, of two feed-rollers,

M and 0, connected to rotatein unison against the front of'the package, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the cabinet or case A, having the slots L, and a roller topress against the package ofsheets of paper, ofa spring-impelled base, H, having at each end an arm, J, extending through and slidable along the slots in the cabinet or case, and clamps K, applied to said arms,for holding the base in the rear of the cabinet, substantially as described.

- 3. The combination, with a case or cabinet provided with an exit-opening, N, and with 6 a spring-impelled base provided with nuts or clamping devices K, of a guide slot or way, L, for said base, rollers M O, and mechanism, substantially as described, for connecting said rollers M O.
