- the present invention relates to an electrophotographic composing device for producing a plate for offset printing press and more particularly a device to be incorporated in the composing device of the type described for recording upon a plate indicia representing a number of copies to be printed by said plate.
- the present invention represents an improvement over the device disclosed in U.S. Pat. application Ser. No. 755 ,625 filed on Aug. 27, 1968, now abandoned by Tamaki Kaneko, entitled by Printing Plate.
- indicia may be read mechanically, electrically or optically by a detector when the plate is mounted in an off-set printing press so that a desired number of copies may be automatically printed by the press.
- the indicia maybe black-colored marks or punched holes. In the former case, a black-colored mark may be so placed as to indicate a desired graduated scale mark to represent thereby a desired number of copies to be printed.
- These indicia consisting of the black-colored mark or dot and the graduated scale marks are placed upon a transparent original holder so that when the light image of an original is projected upon a photosensitive member, which is made into a plate for off-set printing presses, they may be also projected upon the plate.
- the indicia placed upon the original holder are also magnified or reduced in scale on the electrophoto-sensitive member accordingly.
- the detectors in the printing presses cannot detect these indicia on the plates when they are varied in dimensions. i Furthermore when the dusts or the like on the transparent original holder are recorded with-the indicia, theymay be picked up by the detectors, so that the noise is involved in the signals representing a desired number of copies to be printed by the plate.
- the indicia forming elements to be projected upon a plate are disposed immediately above along a portion of the plate which is not used in printing so that no dust or the like is recorded upon the plate.
- These indicia forming elements are projected by a light source different from a light source for projecting the light image of the original upon the plate or photosensitive member so that the shadow of a member for supporting these indicia forming elements would be formed upon the plate.
- both of the light sources are so arranged that the shadow formed by the light source for projecting the indicia forming elements may be illuminated by the beam of light from the light source for projecting the light image of the original whereby no shadow of the supporting member is formed upon the plate.
- FIG. 2 is a top view of an exposure station illustrating an indicia recording device in accordance with the present invention
- FIG. 3 is a fragmentary view illustrating graduated scale mark forming elements and an indicator thereof.
- FIG. 4 is a diagrammatic view illustrating an arrangement for eliminating the shadow of an indicia forming element supporting member.
- FIG. 1 illustrates an electrophotographic composing device 1 embodying the present invention.
- a electrophoto-sensitive member fed into the device 1 by an automatic sheet feeder 2 is uniformly charged in a charging station 3 and forwarded to an exposure station 6 by a conveyor belt 5 under the attracting force produced by a suction box 4.
- the electrophoto-sensitive member is held stationary in the exposure station during exposure inwhich a light source 7 is turned on, so that the beam of light is reflected by a reflecting mirror 8 and reaches an original placed upon a transparent original holder 9.
- the beam of light is ten reflected by the original and redirected by a reflecting mirror 10 and a movable optical system 11 toward the exposure station 6 so that the light image of the original is focused upon the electrophoto-sensitive member which is held stationary under the attracting force produced by the suction box 4.
- the exposed paper is forwarded to a dry developing station 12 by the conveyor belt 5 and the electrostatic latent image is developed.
- the developed paper is forwarded to a fixing station 13 where it is fixed by heat and then discharged out of the device 1.
- the conveyor belt 5 consists of a plurality of belts 14 spaced apart laterally by a suitable distance and a plurality of small holes 15 formed through the top of the suction box 4 are so arranged as to be exposed between the spacings of the belts 14.
- the graduated scale forming elements 16 and indicators 17 are located along on side edge of the conveyor belt 5.
- the graduated scale forming elements 16 comprise plurality of opaque comb-tooth-like members and are extended horizontally from an upstanding member 19 (See FIG. 3), which in turn is securely fixed to a device frame 18.
- Each unit of said graduated scale forming elements comprises a group of ten comb-tooth-like members.
- the indicators 17 comprise tapered plates and are slidably carried by a guide rod 20 which in turn is also securely fixed to the machine frame 18, so that an operator may slide the indicators 17 from the exterior of the composing device 1. That is, the indicators 17 are placed to indicate the desired graduated scale forming elements 16 depending upon a number of plates to be reproduced.
- the four indicators 17 shown in FIG. 2 are for indicating the units, tens, hundreds and thousands so that a four-digit number from 0001 to 9999 may be marked upon the plate.
- the graduated scale forming elements 16 are placed in the same plane of the indicators 17 and both of the elements 16 and indicators 17 are spaced apart from the electrophotosensitive member by a relatively small distance.
- the graduated scale forming elements 16 and the indicators 17 are projected upon the electrophoto-sensitive member by a light source different from that used for projecting the light image of the original upon the electrophoto-sensitive member.
- the shadow of the upstanding member 19 is not formed because the outermost beams of light from the light sources 21 and 7 intersect each other as shown in FIG. 4.
- the shadow of the upstanding member 19 is illuminated by the light from the light source 7 for projecting the light image of the original upon the electrophoto-sensitive member.
- the shadows of the elements 16 and the indicators 17 are recorded upon the electrophoto-sensitive member.
- the indicia consisting of the shadows of the graduated scale forming elements 16 and the indicators 17 may be recorded upon a predetermined portion of the electrophoto-sensitive member along with the image of the original irrespective its magnification. Furthermore, the dimensions of the indicia remain unchanged independent of the magnification or reduction of the original. Since the graduated scale forming elements 16 as well as the indicators 17 are arranged independently of the transparent original holder 9 upon which the dusts or the like tend to accumulate, the
- shadows of the elements 16 and the indicators 17 may be clearly recorded upon the sensitized paper, so that the detection of the indicia is not adversely affected by the shadows of the dusts or the like which may produce the noise.
- 1f ii e lectrophotographic composing device including an exposure station (6) for exposing a plate and projecting means including a first light source (7) for projecting the image of an original onto a first portion of said plate when the plate is at the exposure station, wherein the improvement is in providing a device for recording upon a second portion of the plate indicia representing the number of copies to be printed by said plate, comprising a.- graduated scale forming elements (16) and a member (19) supporting said graduated scale forming elements at said exposure station (6) immediately above said second portion of a plate to be exposed, which second portion is not used in printing, said graduated scale-forming elements comprising opaque comb teeth spaced from the printing plate;
- opaque indicator means (17) slidably disposed in the same plane as that of said graduated scale forming elements (11) and actuable from the exterior of said composing device to indicate desired ones of said graduated scale forming elements to thereby represent the number of copies to be printed by the plate;
- each unit of said graduated scale forming elements comprises a group of ten combtooth-like members.
