HIRAM STORMS, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARDING-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,923, dated November 1l, 1562.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM S'roRMs, of Ann Arbor, in the county of VVashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in CardingMachinery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal view of what is called the fancy cylinder of acarding-machine having my invention applied. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gures.
The object of this invention is to obviate the difficulty experienced in carding from the teeth getting dull and the necessity of stopping the machine from time to time to grind them; and to this end it consists in inserting in the spaces between the cards of the fancy cylinder strips of wood or other material coated on their faces with emery. These emery-coated faces, being even with or very slightly below the tops of the teeth of the fancy, and moving at a higher velocity than the tops of the teeth of the main cylinder, keep the teeth of the said cylinder always ground and sharp, and will also grind the doffer if the latter be raised to work in contact with it.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A A are the cards of the fancy cylinder, having spaces of equal width between them, and B B are the emery-coated strips of wood arranged in the said spaces and secured to the body C of the cylinder by means of screws a a 0r other suitable means. The coating of emery may be deposited on the strips B B by iirst applying a coating of glue or other adhesive material and then sprinkling the emery upon the said coating.
The fancy cylinder having this improve ment applied may be used for grinding the other cards one at a time by arranging upon the carding-machine bearings suitably arranged in relation to the fancy for their reception and by applying a suitable system of belts and pulleys to drive them.
The strips or grinding-surfaces B B, instead of being composed of strips of wood coated with emery, may be made of a composition of emery and any suitable adhesive material.
Vhat claim as niyinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Furnishing the fancy cylinder of a cardingmachine with emery-coated strips or grinding-surfaces of similar character arranged in the spaces between the cards,'substantially as herein specified.
