SEPARABLE BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,201, dated August 30, 1887.
Application filed February 10, 1887 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIOK MEYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Separable Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in. a separable button composed of a hollow button-head having an elastic face and an opening in itsback, a shank having a head at its inner end which can pass freely through the opening in the back of the button-head, and a slide fitted between the face and the back of the buttonstructed to engage the shank, as hereinafter more fully explained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a transverse vertical section in the plane as at, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in the plane y 3 Fig. 1, looking upward in the direction of the arrow opposite to that line, showing the slide drawn back to its unlocking position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the slide in its locking position. Fig. 4 is a detached plan of the slide.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the button-head, which is composed of the faceplate a and the back-plate b, the two plates being united so as to leave between them a free space, 0. Said plates are by preference made of sheet metal, and one or both are sufficiently elastic so that they can spring apart and that they are enabled to retain a body placed between them by their elastic force.

(NomodeL) G is formed a pear-shaped slot, h, the large portion of which is of such a diameter that the head 6 of the shank B can freely pass through the same, while the small portion of said pearshaped slot is just large enough to admit the body of the shank B. When the slide is drawn out, the head 6 of the shank B can be inserted, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,and' when the slide is then pushed in to the position shown in Fig. 3 the head 0 of the shank B is forced up against the faceplate a of the button-head,and at the same time the narrow portion of the pear-shaped slot it engages the body of the shank B, and by the elastic force of the faceplate asufficient friction is created between the head 6 of the shank and the body of the slide, so that said slide is not liable to release the shank spontaneously. At the outer end of the slide 0 is formed a lip, i, by means of which said slide can be pushed back so as to release the shank B.
Heretofore a separable button has been composed of a back-plate or shoe having a shank provided with a grooved end, a front plate having a rim and a flanged opening for theinsertion of the grooved shank, and a springslide on said front plate,havinga pear-shaped openingfor retaining and releasing thegrooved shank. Such, therefore, I do not broadly claim.
What I claim as new,aud desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A separable button consisting of the hollow button-head A, composed of an elastic face- ;plate, a, and a back-plate, I), provided with an opening, 61, a shank. B, having the head 0 at its inner end adapted to bear against the elastic plate, and the slide 0, fitted into the hollow space of the button-head and having a pearshaped opening, h, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
