W TNESSA'S UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. M. SEVERANCE, OF DIXON, ILLINOIS.
1MPROVEM ENT IN PLATFORM-SCALES.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 36,9 l 8. dated November 11,15J'2.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN M. SEVERANCE, of Dixon, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in PlatfornrScales; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention, taken in the line mm, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, ahorizontal section of the same, taken in the line 1 11 Fig. '1. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sections of portions of the same, taken, respectively, in the lines 2 z x m, Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a vertical section of a portion of the same, taken in the line 3 3 Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a platform-scale which will be extremely simple in construction and capable of being manufactured at a comparatively small expense, not liable to get deranged by use, he compact and portable.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a rectangular box, constructed of stout plank or timber secured together in any proper manner. \Vithin this box A there are placed two parallel bars, B B, which are connected by crosspieces O C, the upper surfaces of which are flush with the upper surfaces of the bars B B, and the upper surfaces of the cross-pieces C O and the portions of the bars B B which are between them extenda trifle above the upper edge of the box A, and have a platform, D, secured to them, as shown in Fig. l.
The bars B B, as well as the crosspieces 0 C, are of wood, and the bars B are secured at their ends by staples a to links or elevises b b, as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. These links or elevises b b are suspended from knife-edged bearings 0, attached to the opposite sides of levers D D D D, the clevis I) being attached to the levers D D, and the clevis I) attached to the levers D D.
The levers D D D D are constructed of wood, and are strengthened each by a metal bar, E, which is bolted or otherwise secured to them. These bars E are bent upward at their inner ends, as shown at (I, so as to be parallel with the inner ends of the levers and at a little distance from them.
The upper ends of the parts d (Z of the bars E of the levers D D are connected by a link, F, which is connected to the lower end of a vertical rod, G, and the lower ends of the vertical parts d d of the bars E are connected by a link, H, to which one end of a lever, I, is suspended by a link, d.
The levers D D are suspended each by a clevis, c, from the upper part of the box A, said elevises being secured to the box by staplesf and fitted on knife edged bearings 9, attached to the levers.
The bearings c g of the levers D D D D" pass through metal plates h, secured to t sides of the levers, and the bars E may br steel and hardened at their parts (I d in or to prevent wear. The bearings c 9 may be of steel and hardened, and also the clev and links previously described.
The lever I has a longitudinal positi the box A, its fulcrum-pin i being in a c J, which is connected to a crossbar, the bottom of the box A. The level the end opposite to that which is connected to the levers D D is connected to the levers D D, which are constructed like the levers D, the former being connected at their inner ends by a link, 9', to which the lever I is suspended by another link,j. The levers D D, however, have their metal bars E secured to their upper surfaces instead of to their under surfaces, and the bars B B are attached to the levers D D at points between the elevises e c, by which the levers D are suspended from the upper part or top of the box A and the inner ends of said levers, while the opposite ends of the bars B are attached to the levers D at points at the outer side of the elevises e, by which and staples 6 said levers D are suspended from the upper part or top of the box A. This arrangement in the mode of connecting the bars B B to the levers D D D D gives a vibratory movement to the lever Ithat is to say, one end of said lever moves upward While the other end moves downward-when a weight is placed on the platform D.
The lever I is provided with metal bars or straps i i, to which the links which connect the lever I to the levers D D are attached.
The rod G is connected at its upper end to a beam, L, which is constructed of wood and has a metal bar, k, fitted in it. This beam Lis provided with a graduated scale, I, midis sus pended from a suitable fixture, m, by a rod, n, as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of the beam L is the some as that of ordinary scales, and by the arrangement of the bars and levers as shown and described a very simple and compact plat-formscale is obtained, one requiring no pit to re eeive the working part The scale also by my improvement may be constructed at a very reasonable cost. There are no parts lillble to get out of repair or become deranged by use.
By constructing the bars B B of wood and the levers l) l), llD and I of wood and metal combined it very light device is ob t-uined combined with strength, as hard wood 1 po.-:ses scs more strength than iron in propor- [ion to its; weight, and said parts cannot be 1 bout, :1 ('(Fllhllfg'ClKiX which would be liable to goccnr it constructed wholly of metal, and I which would render the scale inaccurate.
Having thus described my iuvcnt-ion, what I claim :is new, and desire. to secure by Let i ters l'zucnt, is
l The combination of the purzrllcl beams B [3 I and lovers 1) l), l) l)", and 1', mid the scale- I- herein set forth.
