UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EDWARD SUTTON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,137, dated August so, 1887.
Application filed May 5, 1887. Serial No. 237,215. (No model.) 7
To all whom) it may concern."
Be it known that I, EDWARD SUTTON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is'to be had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention applied to a ladder. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is aplan view of the fire-escape without the ladder. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional elevation taken on the line as x of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail side view of the winding-drum, and Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view of the upper end of the ladder.
The invention will first bedescribed in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
A A represent the side pieces of the main frame (if the fireescape. These side pieces are of cast-iron joined together by the rods B B, and in these side pieces is journaled the shaft 0, on which is secured the brake-drum D and the ratchet-wheel E. At the sides and base of the side pieces, A, are cast the cleats a a, which receive the lower ends of the ladder F, and hence the frame of the fire-escape becomes the support for the ladder, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2, the bottoms of the side pieces, A, being flanged, as shown at a a, for supporting the ladder.
Upon the shaft 0, between the brake-drum D and the ratchetwheel E, is placed loosely the drum G, upon which is wound the rope H. This rope reaches from the drum G up over the pulley J, placed upon the rod K, attached to the top of the ladder F. Upon the drum G isplaced another rope, L. This is wound in the opposite direction from the rope H, so that when the rope H is paid out the rope L will be wound up, and vice versa. Over the drum D is placed the strap M, which is attached at one end to the pin b in one of the side pieces, A, of the frame, and at the other to the lever N outside of the fulcrum c of said lever, so that when said lever is pressed downward the strap M will be drawn in firm contact with the drum D, andthus act as a brake to prevent the rope H from passing out too rapidly. Another strap, M, is attached at one end to the pin b, and at the other to the lower end of the lever N, so that when the said lever is depressed at its outer end it will alsobring the strap M into contact with the drum D, so that with a single lever both straps M M may be held in contact with the drum D, which constitutes a very efiectual brake. When any weight comes upon the rope H-that of a person, for'example, descending from a burning building-the drum G will be lockedv to the shaft 0 by the click 0, engaging with the ratchet-wheel E, so that the weight will cause the said drum, the shaft 0, and the drum D to revolve, all of which may be easily controlled by the lever N. The unwinding of the rope H from the drum G will wind the rope L on the drum G, so that by simply pulling upon the rope L the revolution of the drum G may be reversed for quickly winding up the rope H.
The rod K is attached to the ladder by the cleats k k, which are divided, as shown at k, to enter recesses k", made in the uprights of the ladder, so that by simply slipping the cleats in place and placing the ladder upon the frame of the fire-escape, and passing the rope H over the pulley J, all will be in readiness for the firemen to ascend the ladder and lower persons by the rope H, the fire-escape being operated by persons at the foot of the ladder.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The fire escape herein shown and described, the same consisting of the frame A, provided with the cleats a, the ladder held by the said main frame and cleats, rods K, pulley J, shaft 0. drum D, secured upon theshaft, the drum G, loose upon the shaft, the ratchetwheel E, click 0, ropes H L, brake-belt M, and brake-lever N, substantially as described.
2. The rod K, having the slotted keepers k k, secured at its ends and provided with the pulley J, in combination with the uprights of the ladder, cutaway at k to receive the keepers k, substantially as described.
EDWARD SUTTON.
