UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E- DUGALD HARVEY ROBERTS, OF WALLAOEBURG, ONTARIO, CANADA, AS- SIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM DOBIE MORAE, OF SAME ILAOE.
GAG E-eock.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,899, dated August 23, 1887.
Application filed April 8, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUG-ALD HARVEY Ron- ERTS, of the village of WVallaceburg, in the county of Kent, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, engineer, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvementin Gage-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to that class of gagecocks in which the passage-wayleading to the boiler is closed by means of a hinged weighted handle having a seat for the reception of rubber packing or similar material suitable for making a steam and water tight joint; and the object of my invention is to provide means by which the said packing may be changed when worn out without difficulty and when a full head of steam is on.
The invention consists, essentially, in forming two or more seats on the face of the head hinged to the gage-cock and adjustably connecting it to the cock, so that either of the seats may be utilized for closing the passageway in the cock during the period that the packing in the other seat is being changed, substantially as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my double-seated gage-cock. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the handle, exposing the seats. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail ofthe portion ofthe cock which screws into the boiler. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of a block used for the purposes of bold ing the handle in the desired position.
A represents the portion of the cock which screws into the boiler.
B is the projecting end of the cock on which the bearing is formed.
0 represents the jaws connected to or forming part of the cock A, and designed to carry the pin or spindle D.
E is the passage-way through the cock A;
Two recesses, I, are made in the face of the head G. Each of these recesses Iis designed to contain a piece of packing, F, made of rubber or other suitable material, and forming a seat by which. the'passageway E may be closed. At the top of each of the recesses I, I prefer to make a passageway, H, through the head G, for the purpose of permitting the in- Sertion of the packing F.
A lug, J, is formed on the head G, which lug has a hole in it, through which the pin or spindle D passes, thereby hinging the head G to the cock, as indicated.
Theweighted handle K is connected to or forms part of the head G, and'is made sufficiently heavy to resist the pressure of the steam when the headG is seated on the projecting end B, as indicated in Fig. -1-.
It will be noticed that the lug J is sufi' ciently narrow to permit the head G to be moved across the face of the projecting end B. It therefore follows that either of the seats I may be brought opposite to the passage-way E, so that the packing F in either of the recesses I may be utilized for the purpose of closing the passageway E.
I'prefer to use a block, L,to fit into the pin D, and fill up the space between the lug J and the jaw O farthest from the said lug. This block L is preferably connected to the cock A by a chain, M.
From this description it will be seen that it is merely necessary, for the purpose of changing the packing F when it is worn out or otherwise requires changing, to move the head G so as to carry the said piece of packing away from the passage-way E, and bring the piece of packing in the other recess opposite to the said passage-way,thereby forming the required joint with the fresh piece of packing, and bringing the old piece of packing in such a position that it can be readily removed and a fresh piece inserted in its place.
What I claim as my invention isv l. A gage-cock, A, with a passage-way, E, formed in it, in combination with a head having a plurality of seats formed on its face and adjustably connected to the cock A, so that either of the seats may be utilized for the purpose of closing the passage-way E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The head G,having the recesses I formed on its face to receive the packing F, in combination with a lug, J, formed on the head G, and pivoted and endwise movable on the pin'or spindle D,carried by the jaws 0, formed on the cock A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The head G, having the recesses I formed on its face, a passage-way, H, to receive the ICO pieces of packing Ewhich fit into the recesses nation with the block L, designed to fit on the [0 I, in combination with the lug J, formed on pin or spindle D between the lug J and jaws the head G, and pivoted and endwise movable O, substantially as and for the purpose specion the pin or spindle D, carried by the jaws fled. 5 0, formed on the cock A, substantially as and for the purposes specified. DUGALD HARVEY ROBERTS 4. The head G, having recesses I formed on \Vitncsses: its face to receive the packing F, and the lug ALBERT LITTLE, J, to pivot on the pin or spindle D, in combi- ISAAC G.
