'OHARLES WAGENFOHB, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
IMITATION BRONZE OR OTHER ORNA MENTAL PLATE FOR BOOK-COVERS, do.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,74i1, dated August 23, 1.887.
Application filed February 9, 1887. Serial No. 227,013. (No' model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES WAeENFoHR, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Imitation Bronze or other Ornamental Plates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the manufacture of imitation bronze and other ornamental plates for book-covers, furniture-panels, &c., for which Letters Patent were granted to me heretofore, N 0. 312,044, dated February 10, 1885, the improvements being designed with a view to render said imitation bronze or other plates more ornamental by the use of differently-colored sheet-metal coverings over said plate; and the invention consists of an imitation bronze or other ornamental plate composed of an embossed foundation-plate, a covering or face layer, and one or more additionalshectmetal layers of different colors from the face layer, said additional layers having portions cut or punched out, so that the face layer protrudes through the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved bronze plate for book-covers, furniture-panels, picture-frames, &c.; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line w 30, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a foundation-plate of pasteboard, wood, or other suitable material, which is covered with acontinuous layer, B, of thin sheet metal, veneer, colored or bronzed paper, plush, silk, &c. The foundation-plate A and its face layer B, are embossed by means of suitable dies into which the required design has been engraved or othcrwise produced.
On the face layer B are cemented, by means of glue or other suitable adhesive substance, one or more auxiliary layers, 0, made of differently-colored metal, paper, leather, &c., said auxiliary layers being cut out by means of a die in such a manner that some portions of the face layerB are covered, while the relayers is produced.
The entire surface of the plate is then finished by being sized and coated with pulverized graphite, bronze powder, or other metallic powder, over which a coat of varnish is placed to protect the bronze coating. By using different layers of sheet metal or analogons coverin gs a very ornamentel and variegated effect is imparted to the plate, and thereby the artistic appearance of the same greatly improved.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An imitation bronze or other ornamental plate for book-covers, furniture-panels, 850., composed of an embossed foundation-plate, a face layer covering said foundationplate and embossed therewith, and an auxiliary layer or layers of different color than the face layer, said auxiliary layer or layers being cemented to the face layer and cut out in part, so as to conform to the contours of the embossed ornamentation of the face layer, substantially as set forth.
2. The method herein described of making imitation bronze or other ornamental plates, which consists in embossing afoundation-plate having an attached face layer, cementing an auxiliary layer or layers of differently-colored material cut out in part, so as to conform to the contours of the embossed foundation-plate, upon said facelayer, exposing the plate to pressure to secure the auxiliary layer or layers to the face layer, and, finally, finishing the entire surface of the plate by bronzing and varnishing, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
