RECEPTACLE HAVING A CYLINDRICAL TARGET OPENING IN THE COVER PORTION AND TETHEREI) BALL BACKGROUND SUMMARY DRAWINGS The invention is a toy somewhat of the Yo-Yo type and is comprised broadly of three elements, namely, a ball, an elastic cord fastened at one end to the ball and at the other end to a container'having a semi-cylindrical axial opening in the cover thereof. The objective of the game is to toss the ball away from the container so that the elastic cord will draw the ball back toward the container and the player tries to catch the ball in the opening in the container cover.
Toys of this type are not new. For example, one common type comprises a paddle with an elastic card anchored at one end in the center of the paddle and a ball attached to the other end of the cord. Here the player strikes the ball and repeatedly strikes it as it is brought back toward the paddle by the elasticity of the cord. There is no means of catching the ball in an opening, nor is the cord anchored to the paddle as in applicants device.
Various other toys utilizing a ball attached at one end of an elastic cord and the other end of the cord attached to various devices are found in the prior art, but none involving a device like applicants.
The invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and wherein like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, and in which FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing the container with the ball resting in the opening in the cover of the container and the elastic cord extending between the ball and container;
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of FIG. '2; and
FIG. 4 is a view showing the toy in operation.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now in detail to the drawings it will be seen in FIGS. 1 and 3 that the toy comprises a cup-like receptacle having a bottom 12 and cylindrical wall 13 extending normally therefrom. The upper margin of the wall 13 is reduced in thickness, providing a space 14 to receive the cylindrical margin 16 of the flange 18 of the cover 20. Axially of the cover 20 a central cylindrical opening 22 is formed, the edge of which rests upon the bottom 12 of the receptacle. The upper edge of the cylindrical portion 20 is turned laterally and extends to the upper edge of the flange 18. The cover is end of the elastic cord 26 may be placed therein with the knot inside the receptacle. The cover when applied thereover will firmly hold the elastic cord anchored to the receptacle, as clearly shown. At the other end of th d26' d b ball28 'h'th te'fh d to tri ia efI t be notedqiia i tliz coiii 26 emerges from the covered receptacle just about midway of the overall height of the receptacle and cover.
With the device thus assembled a player holds the device in his hand and tosses the ball into the air with sufiicient force to stretchthe cord. The resilience of the cord will draw the ball back toward the container, and the player attempts to catch the ball in the opening 22 on its return.
For added stability an annular collar 30 is integrally formed with the bottom 12 of the receptacle projecting a short distance therefrom and the lower margin of the cylindrical portion 22 overlaps same when the cover is applied.
Another objective in playing with the toy, is thatthe container may be held in the palm of one hand with the bottom of the container being used as a paddle to repeatedly strike as it is returned due to the resilience of the cord.
In size, the toy is small enough to carry around on ones pocket so that the toy is available for play at any time or place. I
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A toy, comprising a cylindrical receptacle having a side wall, one open end, and a bottom, a removeable cover for said receptacle having a central cylindrical portion extending within the receptacle, the upper edge of said cylindrical portion extending laterally and THEN downwardly, overlapping the open end of the receptacle, a length of resilient cord attached at one end to the wall of the receptacle, and at the other end to a ball, the toy being operable to throw the ball away from the receptacle to stretch the resilient cord so as to bring the ball back toward the cylindrical portion of the cover and to catch the same therein.
2. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein the central cylindrical portion of the cover is slightly larger in diameter than the'diameter of the ball.
3. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein the central cylindrical portion of the cover extends to the bottom of the receptacle.
4. The structure as defined in claim 1, and an annular collar integrally formed axially. on the bottom of the receptacle, and the free margin of the cylindrical portion of the cover overlaps said collar when the cover is applied.
5. The structure as defined in claim 1, wherein an end of the resilient cord is attached to the receptacle by being bound thereto between the overlapping margin of the cover and wall of the container.
6. The structure as defined in claim 1, wherein the upper margin of the receptacle side wall is provided with a slot to receive one end of the elastic cord and the overlapping margin of the cover binds the cord thereto.

Claims (6)

2. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein the central cylindrical portion of the cover is slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the ball.
3. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein the central cylindrical portion of the cover extends to the bottom of the receptacle.
4. The structure as defined in claim 1, and an annular collar integrally formed axially on the bottom of the receptacle, and the free margin of the cylindrical portion of the cover overlaps said collar when the cover is applied.
