The invention is more particularly directed toward providing such a dump bin which has an upper tray and a lower support structure and is formed from a single piece of material from stock such as corrugated paper board or cardboard.
Most prior art dump bins, which were formed from corrugated paper board or similar material, were either difficult to erect at the point of display or were weak and unstable. Most of them were made of more than one piece and it was therefore more difficult for a salesman or a demonstrator to erect them quickly and easily.
Corrugated paper board and similar material lends itself to the fabrication of tubular shapes from a flat, onepiece sheet whose pattern is cut and scored to facilitate the erection of a finished dump bin. For a long time, need has existed for a readily erectable, single piece, dump bin which may be erected and used at the point of sale and/or display and which may be carried flat by one person.
Broadly, the invention provides a tubular unit formed from a single sheet and which has a lower base and an upper tray. There are at least two side panels each of which projects inwardly from a side of the tubular unit. The side panels are partially severed from and partially joined to the sides from which they project. The upper tray is formed by top panels. Preferably four if the tubular unit is four sided, which fold into the top of the tube and are supported by the inwardly projecting side panels.
Accordingly, it is an important object of the invention to provide a tubular unit formed of a single piece of material and which has an upper tray and a lower support for supporting the tray.
It is a further object of the invention to provide such a unit wherein the upper tray panels interlock with the inwardly projecting side panels.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide such a unit wherein the inwardly projecting side panels interlock with each other.
It is yet another object of the invention to provide such a unit wherein the top panels interlock with each other.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide such a unit wherein the top panels interlock with each other and with the inwardly projecting side panels.
These and other objects, advantages, features and uses will be apparent during the course of the following description, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective of one embodiment of erected FIGS. 7, 8, l0 and 11 are perspective view of I completed dump bins of the invention showing various side panel configurations;
FIG. 9 is a perspective view of a completed threesided dump bin of the invention;
FIG. 12 is a pattern of another embodiment of dump bin of the invention;
FIG. 13 is a partial pattern of still another embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 14 is a broken-away perspective view of a par-' tially erected dump bin which is formed from the pat-'- tern of FIG. 13; and
FIG. 15 is a perspective view of the dump bin fomied from the pattern of FIG. 13.
In the drawings, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, there are shown various embodiments of the dump bin of the invention, the numeral 20 designates a completed dump bin (FIG. 1). Dump bin 20 is formed of a single piece of material such as corrugated paper and is seen to be a tubular, four-sided figure.
An upper tray 22 is formed above the lower base and I has four top panels 24 which are folded to form the tray 22 which is supported by inwardly projecting panels 26 which are partially severed from-and partially joined to their associated sides 28 as shown at 30 and 32, respectively. The lower base is formed by the sides 28 when the unit is expanded as shown in FIG. 1.
. Each top panel is provided with a slot 34 which is engaged by a projection 36 on a side panel 26. The top panels are scored as shown at 38 so that when they are folded down into the inside of the tube, portion 40 helps to form the horizontal portion of the tray and portion 42 forms a portion of the side of the tray.
To improve the stability of the upper tray, two opposite panels 42 are provided with a projection 44 on each edge, each of which interlocks with a slot 46 which is located adjacent an edge of the other two opposite panels 42.
To erect the dump bin of FIG. 3, the tube, which has been joined by a manufacturers joint and is transported folded and flat, is expanded and the side panels 26 are pushed in. Two opposite top panels 24 are folded down and the projections 36 are engaged in their associated slots 34. Then the other two top panels are folded down so that their slots 34 are engaged by their associated projections 36 and the projections 44 are engaged in their associated slots 46. Now, product of considerable weight and bulk may be placed in the upper tray for display and/or sale.
FIG. 4 is a pattern of another embodiment of the invention. It is formed of a flat, single sheet 50 which is cut as shown by the solid lines and scored as shown by the dashed lines. The manufacturers joint is formed by folding on score line 54 and wrapping edge 52 around edge 56 so that score line 54 contacts edge 56. The joint is then suitably fastened by gummed tape, staples, glue or any other means. All the dump bins of the invention, illustrated and described herein, are made in the same manner as has just been described and are preferably delivered to the user in tubular form, folded .to receive product. The second side panel 92 from the left is provided with scores .102 nd if all panels were so formed, we then have the embodiment of FIG. 7. If the side panels of the figure are unscored, we then have the embodiment of FIG. 1. v
The dump bin 110 of FIGS. 13-15 is a four-sided tubular unit wherein only two side panels project inwardly to support the upper tray. A pair of inwardly projecting, opposite side panels 112 are severed at their top from their respective sides and are scored as shown at 114, 1 16 and 118.The top'panels 120 are in three sections 122, 124 and l26'and are provided with interlocking projections 128 and slots 130.
When side panel 112 is pushed in, it expands a pair of gussets 132 which help support the upper tray when the top panels] 120are folded down as shown in FIG. 14.
Whenall four-top panels 120 are folded down, the
