I\'\ NWO IRVING GISH RAZOR BLADE HOLDER This invention relates to razor blade holders.
It is a principal object of the present invention to provide a razor blade holder that will have an increased grip on the razor blade such as can be provided by a levering action for engagement of the sides of the razor blade to more firmly hold the blade against release from the holder.
It is another object of the invention to provide a razor blade holder formed of two parts between the forward ends of which is provided a tightening screw or the like to tentatively secure the blade to the holder parts and a second screw rearwardly thereof serving to spread the holder parts and pivot them about the forward screw to effect the final gripping action upon the b ade.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description, taken in connection to the accompanying drawing, in which:-
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the razor blade holder, having parts extended and a blade gripped between the extended parts in a knife blade fashion.
FIG. la is a fragmentary perspective view of the razor blade holder with the parts closed in a flush manner with the blade located in place between the parts for storage.
FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the razor blade holder with the blade in place and clamped between the holder parts.
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the spread holder parts gripping the blade and is viewed on line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a rear end elevational view of the razor blade holder with illustration being made as to the manner in which a washer on a chain is used to turn the retaining screws.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the blade attaching end of the device modified to show a groove provided in the part for retaining a round drill-like tool element.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary forward end view of the parts of FIG. 5 secured together to grip the drill tool element.
Referring now particularly to FIGS. 1 to 4, 10 indicates generally the razor blade holder embodying the features of the present invention. This holder 10 comprises two separable parts 11 and 12, having flat inner faces that can be joined together in a flush manner by a screw 13 that passes through a free hole 14 adjacent a forward end of the part II and inserted into a threaded opening 15 in the part 12 and tightened to bring the forward ends of the holder parts 11 and 12 together in the manner as shown in FIG. la, so as to hold a razor scraping blade 16 for storage purposes. The forward ends of the holder parts 11 and 12 are respectively tapered or beveled at 17 and 18 to reduce the end size of the parts and give the effect of a bladed knife when a razor blade 19 of a cutting type, is disposed between the forward ends of the blades in order to be gripped thereby so that its cutting edge 20 can be used as with a blade of an ordinary knife and held with equal rigidity.
The scraper type of blade 16 has the usual folded over grip member 21 and may be applied to the forward ends of the holder parts in order to provide a scraper, the cutting edge of the blade 16 extending transversely of the holder parts rather than longitudinally with the blade 19 as shown in FIG. I.
The hole 14 in the holder part 11 is slightly oversized to provide for some play in the hole when the screw 13 is tightly secured in the threaded hole 15 of the part 12 as can best be seen in FIG. 3. This movement permits the holder parts 11 and 12 to be spread, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, so that inner edges 22 and 23 of the respective parts 11 and 12 will grip tightly, as best shown in FIG. 3, the side edges of the blade 16 or 19. Thus, the screw 13 need not be extended fully home within the threaded opening 15 of the part 12 but tight enough to hold the blade flush between the parts 11 and 12.
In order to effect a spreading of the holder parts 11 and 12, a screw 24 inserted through a threaded hole 25 in the holder part 12 and somewhat rearwardly removed from the hole 15 in this same part. The screw 24 is threaded through the hole 25 and is brought to register within an enlarged depression 26 in the inner face of the holder part 11. Upon tightening the screw 24, the holder parts 11 and 12 will be spread on one another and the ends 22 and 23 will be levered about the screw 13 onto the sides of the blade 16 or 19. In this manner the blade 16 or 19 is tightly gripped and is retained so that it will not be released from the position in which it was gripped when in any use to which the combined implement is put.
When the blade is to be retained for storage purposes, as shown in FIG. la, the screw 24 will be released and the screw 13 tightened allowing the holder parts to come together in flush relationship with the sides of the blade.
This razor blade holder can also be used with a key chain 27 that is extended through holes 28 and 29 in the respective rear ends of the blade holder parts 11 and 12 and is coupled together in the usual manner by end fastener 31 engageable with a ball end 32 of the chain as viewed in FIG. 2. The key chain 27 may not only contain keys, but also a ring washer 33, of such thickness that it can be used as a screwdriver to fit the slot 34 in the screw 24 or the slot 36 in the forward screw 13 and serve to tighten or loosen the screw. A key also could be used for this purpose, thereby eliminating the need to look for a regular screwdriver.
Referring now to FIGS. 5 and 6, parts 11 and [2 are shown provided on their inner faces with grooves 37 and 38 for receiving a round tool element 39, which will be gripped similarly to the razor blade as the blade holder parts are spread by the rear screw 24. It will be seen that this razor blade holder is put to a further use to hold rigidly round tool element 39 and without altering the use of the device for the securement of razor blade that is made by the forward edges.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided an effective razor blade holder in which the gripping action is effected upon the razor blade by the levering of the ends of the blade parts against the side faces of the blade. The forward screw 13 is first tightened upon the part 12 to make a tight grip upon the blade and by the spreading of the parts with the screw 24 full locking action is effected upon the blade at the opposing part edges 22 and 23. It should be apparent that the blade will now be retained in a very tight manner than by the mere clamping of holder parts to the sides of the blade in the usual fashion as is done with instruments of this type.
What is claimed is:
l. A razor blade holder comprising elongated separable holder parts, one of said parts having a threaded hole adjacent to the forward end of the part and the other part having a free and slightly oversized hole adapted to be aligned with the threaded hole, a fastening screw secured through the free hole of the other part and threaded into the threaded hole of the one part to effect a gripping action upon the sides of a razor blade disposed therebetween, in which said one part defines a female-threaded through-passage, further including a rear-spreading screw mountable within said threaded through-passage, the other holder part having a depression in its inner face for receiving the end of the rear spreading screw, and the rear ends of said holder part having holes extending therethrough, a key chain extending through the holes and joined together, a screw driver like member carried on the chain and said chain being sufficiently long to permit the engagement of the screw driver like member with either of the screws to adjust the same.
2. A razor blade holder as defined in claim I, and said holder blade parts having inner faces adapted to lie normally flush with one another and forward edges adapted to have line and opposing engagements with sides of the razor blades.
3. A razor blade holder as defined in claim 1, and said holder parts having inner faces adapted for flush engagement with one another and the forward ends of said faces being grooved to receive drill-like tool elements, the forward end of each of said grooves running across with the end gn'pping edge of the blade part.
