J. M. OOLMAN.
NECK YOKE SWIVEL.
No. 368,381. Patented Aug. 16, 1887.
INVENTOR I BY MW ATTORNEYS.
n. PETERS. mwmn m Walh'mginn, v.1;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES MORTON OOLMAN, OF NE? CASTLE, \VAS HINGTON TERRITORY.
NECK-YOKE SWIVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,381, dated August 16, 1887.
Application filed November 12. 1886. Serial No. 218,701.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES Mon'roN COLMAN, of New Castle, in the county of King and Territory of WVashington, have invented a Neclc Yoke Swivel, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a simple, cheap, and durable neck-yoke attachment, and one wherein the parts are so adjusted as to permit a universal action, whereby it will be found that the device constitutes a thoroughly satisfactory and efficient attachment when applied, as will be hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my form of neck-yoke swivel, the parts being repre sented as they appear when arranged in connection with a neck-yoke and pole. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detailed views representing several of the parts employed to form the swivel illustrated in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, represents the pole ofa vehicle, and 11 the neck-yoke. This neckyoke 11 is encircled by two bands, 12, the ends of which are bolted or riveted to the wings 13 of a block, 14.
A strap or leather, 16, which, as usual, is formed with an aperture, 17 through which the pole 10 passes, is held by a cross-bolt, 18, that is supported by a U shaped iron, 19, the lower ends of the arms 20 of said iron being rounded, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The iron 19 carries a short vertical post, 21 the upper end of which is threaded, as shown (No model.)
at 22. This post 21 passes through a central aperture, 24, that is formed in the block 14, the threaded end of the post being engaged by a nut, 2, above which there is arranged ajamnut, 3. i
From the construction described it will be seen that the neck-yoke may be turned in an ydireetion in a horizontal plane upon the post or standard 21, and that it may be swung as desired in a vertical plane by turning it upon its connection with the pole of the vehicle, whereby I obtain a perfectly free and easy motion for the horses, the advantage of which will be readily appreciated by those who have been troubled with the old form of neck-yoke clip.
Having thus fully described my invention, I'claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A neck -yoke swivel comprising the U shaped iron 19, having apertures in its depending ends 20, and a vertical post, 21, having threads 22, the leather 16, having a cross-bolt passed through it and secured in the apertured ends 20, the block 14, having a central vertical aperture, 24, receiving the post 21, and wings 13, apertured at right angles to the vertical aperture 24, the nuts 2 3, and the neck-yoke bands 12, bent parallel at their ends to receive the cars 13, said bent portions having apertures in alignment with those of the ears 13, and passed therethrough, substantially as set forth.
JAMES MORTON OOLMAN.
