ATENI OFFICE,
EDlVARD BARN ARD, ROME, NE\V YORK.
HARNESS-LOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,271, dated August 16, 1887.
Serial No. 232,409. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD BARNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harness-Loops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harness-loops of that class shown in a prior patent, No. 341,717, issued to me on the 11th day of May, 1886; and it consists of the peculiar and novel construction of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of my present invention is to provide an improved loop or D of simple and cheap construction, which will permit of the attachment of a breeching and a number of other straps thereto without permitting them to come in contact and chafe or wear the breeching-strap.
In the accompanying drawings,whicl1 illustrate a part of a harness having my improved loop, Figure l is a view showing the breeching, the breechingstrap, a side strap, and a lazy-strap connected to my improved loop. Fig. 2 is a view showing the breeching and breeching-strap only connected to the loop. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View on the line 00 w of Fig.2. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective View of the loop.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates a brecching, B a breeching-strap, G a side strap, and D a lazy-strap, all of which are of any common or preferred pattern and are arranged in a manner similar to ordinary harness.
E is my improved loop or D, which is cast or formed in a single piece of metal, and consists of two side bars, e, which are preferably arranged parallel with each other, a curved end bar, f, connecting the side bars at one end, a straight end, 5/, connecting the opposite ends of the side bars, and an intermediate bar, It, arranged between theside bars and at a short distance from the straight end bar. This intermediate bar, it, forms an auxiliary or supplemental loop with the side and end bars, which is inclosed within the main loop or D, and is of course of smaller size, the
width of the space between the straight end and the intermediate bars being sufficient to permit the breeching A to be passed therethrough.
The breeehing A is passed through the aux iliary loop of the D and doubled or bent over the straight end bar, 9, thereof, the breeching-strap is connected to one of the side bars of the loop, the lazy-strap is connected to the other side bar, and the side strap is connected to the curved end bar of the loop, all as will be understood by reference to Fig. 1. It will be observed that the intermediate bar, h, of the loop efi'ectually prevents the breeching from movement or play, and prevents the lazy and breeching straps from coming in contact with the brecching, as the said lazy and breeching straps are connected to the side bars of the loop on the opposite side of the intermediate bar, h, from the straight end bar, g.
The pull upon the brecching, lazy, and side straps when they are in use will hold them in engagement with their respective bars of the loop, so that they will not unduly wear and ehafe one another, and thus all of the straps connected with the loop are prevented from being unduly worn, which is very desirable.
In my prior patent, hereinbefore referred to, I provide a loop having an acute-angled bar intermediate a side and curved bar and a stud or lug projecting inwardlyinto the space bounded by the bars, and arranged at a point where the acute-angled and curved bars meet; but this loop does not permit of the attachment thereto of the side and lazy straps without coming in contact with the breeching and unduly chafing and wearing the latter.
I attach especial importance to theloop having an intermediate bar arranged within the bars forming the loop and a short distance from one of bars to thereby form an auxiliary or supplemental loop within the main loop or D, as therein lies the gist of my present invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a harnessloop, E, consisting of a straight bar, 9, the curved bar f, the sides 6, and the rectangular cross-bar h, adjacent to the bar 7, all
of which parts are integrally formed, the crossmy own I have hereto affixed my signature in bar h and 'the bar 9 forming an auxiliary 100p presence of two Witnesses. and being adapted to receive the breeching A, the end bar, 1, the side strap, and the side bars, 5 e e, and. the lazy and breeching straps, substan- Witnesses:
tially as described. W. W. CHAMBERLAIN, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as CHARLES W. ELLIs.
EDWARD BARNARD.
