VENTILATING ATTACHMENT FOR STOVE-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,231, dated August 16, 1887.
Application filed January 12, 1887. Serial No. 224,103. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gmnnncn W. PARKS, of Mecosta, in the county of Mecosta and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ventilating attachments especially adapted for use in connection with stoves, ranges, and other culinary apparatus.
It is desirable that the smoke, steam, and odors arising from culinary operations should be taken out of the apartment, and in order to do this effectually and with little trouble and expense they should be brought within the draft force of the chimney, through which they may be carried to the open atmosphere. It is also desirable that the ventilating attachment should be made vertically adjustable, so that it may be elevated or lowered, as circumstances may require, and laterally adjustable to enable it to be used in various positions.
The object of this invention is to provide a ventilating attachment which will meet all ordinary requirements; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the various parts and their combination, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is an elevation, partially in section, showing my improved ventilating attachment. Fig. 2 is a detail showing the means for obtaining a vertical and radial adjustment.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a pyramidical or funnel shaped hood made of sheet metal, from the apex of which leads the pipe B, having a catch-pin, a, secured to it and projecting from its side.
C is an elbow-pipe, within the vertical arm ,of which the pipe 13 is inserted, and it has a slot, 7), cut in its side, one or both sides of said slot being serrated or provided with teeth a. Over the slot there is secured the bridge or threcsidcd box D,having its upper end closed, and in its front are made one or more peekholes, (I, covered with glass (1. The pipe B being inserted as described, the projecting pin enters the slot, and by a radial or partiallyrotary movement of such pipe B the pin is compelled to engage with any one of the serrations, as may be desired to regulate the height of the hood, such engagement being seen through the peek-holes for certainty.
E is a branch pipe communicating with the stove-pipe F through an opening in the stovepipe registering with the end of the pipe E, and secured thereto by a band-clamp, G, of any desired construction, and by means of a brace, H. This branch pipe is provided with notches c, and the horizontal arm of the elbow has a catch-pin, h. secured to and projecting from its upper side, so that when the hood A is hanging in a normal or vertical position the catch-pin projects from the upper periphery of the horizontal arm of said elbow, which is sleeved in the branch pi pc E. The horizontal arm of the elbow being thus sleeved, allows the hood to be adjusted horizontally as may be desired. If it is desired to swing the hood out of the way, then the elbow to which it is pendent, as described, may be turned in its sleeve, (the branch 15,) and the catch-pin h, engaged with one of the notches c, which are located opposite each other and in the side peripheries of such branch pipe E.
I is a damper placed in' the branch pipe E, for use when circumstances may require or when it may be desired.
\Vhat I claim as my invention isl. The combination, with the lateral pipe E, provided upon its side with notch c, of the elbow C, carrying the hood and provided upon its lateral arm with a pin, h, parallel with the vertical arm of said elbow, whereby the hood may be turned up out of the way and there re tained by the engagement of said pi n and notch, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the pi pe B, carrying the hood and provided with pin a, of the elbow-pipe C, having serrated slot, and the box D, covering said slot and provided with sight-openings d, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
CLARENCE \V. PARKS.
