GEORGE O. EATON, OF GARDINER, MONTANA TERRITORY.
FINGER NAIL CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,198, dated August 16, 1887.
Application filed December 28, 1886. Serial No. 222,861. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. EATON, of Gardiner, in the county of Park and Territory of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nail Cleaners, of which the following is a description.
The invention relates particularly to the nail-blade commonly employed in pocket knives, which ordinarily consists in a flat main portion which has a file surface and a flat, pointed, nail-cleaning terminal portion which has aknife edge, and which upon both back and edge is convex from end to end. It has been found in numerousinstances that the width of this terminal nail-cleaning portion is greater than the space between the surface of the finger and the inner surface or under portion of the nail, and that when in removing accumulations of foreign substances the point of the blade has been introduced into the innermost extremity of this space the nail has been lifted and torn away from the flesh, the apparently trivial laceration frequently producing irritation which it is ditficult to allay and which has sometimes been so serious as for a considerable length of time to produce entire disability of the member.
\Vith aview to avoidance of results of this character my invention consists in providing in the terminal or knife portion of the nailcleaning blade a curved recess or concavity which has the effect, without materially diminishing the strength of the part, of adapting the width of the blade to the space which 5 when in operation it is required to occupy.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation of a pocket-knifc which is provided with my improved nail-blade. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the terminal or knife portion of the naitblade as of a slightly-modified form. 0 Fig. 3 is a side view showing the relation of the improved nailcleaner to the finger when applied thereto. Fig. 4 represents in side elevation a manicure-file provided with the improved nail-cleaner. 5
In all the figures, A is the handle of the knife, and A the nail-blade, b being the body or file-surfaced portion of such blade, 0 the nail-cleaner or knife portion, and (l the recess or concavity within which the rounded extremity of the finger is received.
As seen in Fig. 2, that portion of the back of the blade which is beyond the concavity d has a straight outline, c. This form of the terminal point of the blade may in some cases 5 5 be adopted.
Having described my invention, I claim- The combination, with the handle A, of the nail-blade A, having body or file portion 1), and the knife portion 0, which in the back thereof is provided with the recess or concaw ity (Z, to accommodate the linger, as and for the purposes specified.
GEORGE O. EATON.
