UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
PATRICK J. HIGGINS, OF NEWV VIENNA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO CHARLES BEARD,
OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,149, dated August 9, 1887,
Application filed May 13, 1887. SeriaLNo. 239,264.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK, J. HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Vienna, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBinding-Posts; and I (lo declarc the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO pertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention has relation to improvements in binding-posts to be used on all kinds of electrical instruments, such as telegraphs, relays, sounders, switch-boards, and the like.
The improvements will be fully understood from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed claim and drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved 2o device as applied to a switch-board. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4-is a perspective view of the hindingscrew removed from the post. Fig. 5 is a view of the washer having a conical aperture.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates a binding-post, which in the present instance is shown as attached to a switchboard, 13. This binding-post consists of a tubular part, as shown, having the greater portion of its length externally screw-threaded, as at a, and its forward end enlarged annularly, as at I). This enlarged portion is provided with longitudinal slits C, which also radiate from thelongitudinal aperture orbore D for the passage of the electrical wire E. It will thus be seen that I form a number of jaws, d, which, when pressure has been ap- (No model.)
plied to them exteriorly, will clamp or bind them upon the wire, thereby reducing the longitudinal bore of the tube at one end, so as to give a firm hold to the wire, no matter how small or large the same may be.
F indicates a washer which has a conical aperture, 0, and is designed to engage the jaws .5 of the split tube or post A to press the same upon a wire. This washer may also have a roughened inner side to engageaswitch-board and prevent the same from turning.
G indicates a nut which is designed to eu- 5o gage the external threads of the tube A, and also to abut against the switchboard, or the like, so as to draw the conical head of the said post or tube into the conical aperture of the washer so as to clamp the jaws of the former upon a wire to bind the same.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my improvements will be obvious.
Itwill be seen that I insure a firm solid con nection without any liability of cutting off or in any manner damaging the wires.
Having described my invention, I claim-- The binding-tube herein described, cxter- 65 nally-threadcd and provided with a split eoni cal head, in combination with a washer, F, and a switch-board and a bindingpost, the several parts being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK J. HIGGINS.
