Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK E. DEGENHARDT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANDARD UNDERGROUND CABLE COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENN SYLVANIA.
CABLE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.368,136, dated August 9,1887.
Application filed April 18, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. DEGEN I'IARDT, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Cable-Hangers, of which improvement the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved hanger applied to a cable. Figs. 2 and 3are perspective and plan views, respectively, of the parts or members of one form of thehanger. Fig. 4 is asectional view of one form of the hanger. Fig. 5 is a similar view of another form of the hanger.
The invention herein relates to certain iniprovements in the construction of hangers for the suspension of aerial cables, and has for its object such a construction as will not only faeilita-te and cheapen the manufacture of such articles, but will also render them capable of being easily and quickly applied.
In general terms the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The main or essential elements or parts of the hanger are the suspending-hook 1, the
'band or strap 2,having the longitudinal slot 3,
and the retaining-tongue 4.
The construction shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 is formed by so clamping a strip of metal as to simultaneously form the slot 3 and the tongue 4, the tongue being formed by the metal cutout from the slot, as shown, one end 01' the tongue remaining attached to the blank or strip. Simultaneously with the above-described operation two small slots, 6, are cut in the head of the blank.
Although I prefer to stamp or cut the blank, as above described, by a single stroke of a suitable die, the blank may be formed in any other suitable manner.
The hook I is preferably formed of malleable cast metal integral with a base-plate, 7, provided with ears orlugs 8. Inlicu of forming the hook and plate of malleable cast metal, it may be formed of wrought metal, the hook being riveted to the plate.
In forming the hanger the tongue 4 is bent back so that a portion of it will lie upon the head of the blank between the slots 6, as indi cated in dotted lines. The hook is then applied, the base-plate resting on the head of the blank, and the cars or lugs 8 proj eeti ng through the slots 6. These lugs are then bentiu wardly upon the tongue 4, thus firmly securing the several parts together.
In lieu of forming the hanger of several parts, as above described, it maybe formedin one piece of malleable cast metal, as shown in Fig. 5.
In applying the hanger to a cable the band 2 is bent around the cable, the tongue 4 being passed through the slot 3, or rather the band is slipped over the tongue, which is then bent up, as shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 5.
I claim as my invention- 1. A hanger for aerial cables, having in combination a suspending-hook, a slotted strap or band connected to the end of the hook on one side thereof, and a tongue connected to the opposite side thereof, substantially as set forth.
FREDERICK E. DEG ENIIARDT.
