UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES NATHAN BATTS, OF COAL VALLEY, WEST VIRGINIA.
SCRUBBING-IVIACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,052, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed September 18, 1856. Serial No. 213,925. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs NATHAN BA'rTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coal Valley, in the county of Fayette and State of West Virginia,I have invented a new and'useful Improvement in Scrubbing-lliachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in scrubbing-machines; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a scrubbing-machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal sectional view of the same.
A represents a car, which is provided on its under side with cross-bars B. To the ends of the said cross-bars, on the under sides of the same, are pivoted casters C, in which are journaled rollers D, that bear upon the floor and support the car and enable the latter to be moved in any direction. In the rear portion of the car is made a seat, E, for the operator, and in the front end of the car is a compartment or box, F, which is water-tight and is adapted to receive the suds to be used in scrubbing the iioor. This box or compartment is provided on its upper side with a hinged lid, G.
H represents a crauk-shaft,'which is journaled in bearings I,that are secured to the upper edges of the car at a suitable distance in front of the seat E, and to one end ofthe crankshaft is attached a crank-wheel, K.
L represents a rock-shaft, which is journ'aled in bearings M at the front end of the car, nearits lower side. The said rock-shaft is provided at its centervwith a crank, L, and at one end with a crank-arm, L2. This latter is connected to the crank-wheel K by means of a pitman-rod, N, which is provided near its upper end with a slot, M, in which works the crank-piu O,that projects from the crankwheel K.
From the foregoing description -it will be readily understood that when the crank-shaft H is rotated the shaft L will be rocked or osoillated. 1 f
The function of the slot M is to cause the shaft L to dwell or remain stationary twice at each rotation o f the crank-wheel while the crank-pin O is passing the dead-center, to the end that the'scrubbing-brush hereinafter described will be caused to rest on the iioorduring a short period at the end of each stroke.
E representsaspring-rod, which` is attached at its inner end to the crank L. This springrod is guided by a keeper, S, on the front end of the car, and projects forwardly therefrom, and the outer end of the spring-rod is pro vided with a transverse notch, R.
T represents a scrubbing-bush,on the upper sideof which is made a transverse recess, ,T, adapted to receive the frontend ofthe springrod, and the said scrubbing-brush is also provided on its upper side with a hinged strap, T2, which is adapted to close over the front end of the spring-rod and. rest in the notch thereof, and the free end of the strap is secured to the scrubbing-brush by means of a catch, T3. By this means it will be readily understood that the scrubbing-brush may be firmly att-ached to the front end of thespringarm or disengaged. therefrom. In the lower side of the sudsbox F is a pipe, U, which project-s forwardly from the car, and the inner end thereof is open and communicates with the interior of the suds-box. A stop-cock, V, is provided for the said pipe, and the stem V thereof projects upwardly through the Ycover of the suds-box, and is provided at its upper end with a suitable handle,by means of which the stop-cock may be turned so as to permit water in the sudsbox to be discharged upon the floor through the pipe U.
The operation of myinvention is as follows: In order to scrub a iloor a suitable quantity of suds is poured into Athe suds-box and the scrubbing-brush is attached to the spring-rod. The operator is then seated on the seat E and grasps the crank-shaft II and rotates the same, thereby communicating an oscillating motion to the shaft L and causing the scrubbingbrush to be reciprocated back and forth in front of the car in contact with the iloor. A suitable quantity of suds is discharged upon the iioor through the pipe U, and the reciproA eating motion of the scrubbing-brush is maintained a sufficient length of time to cause it to thoroughly scrub the iioor at that point. A pushing pole or lever is grasped by the oper- IOO ator in the ear, and the end thereof is rested against the floor or wash-board, and by pressing upon the same the ear may be moved to any point of the floor desired.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that the operator is entirely protected from contact with the fioor while the scrubbing is being done, thus rendering it impossible for her feet to get wet, and avoiding the danger of contracting colds or rheuniatism.
Having thus described my invention, I claim l. rlhe combination of the car, the crankshaft II, journaled thereto and having the crank-pin O, the rock-shaft L, the scrubbingbrush connected thereto and operated thereby, the said rock-shaft having the crank If, and the pitinan N, connecting the latter with the crank-pin O, and having the slot M,in which the said pin slides, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the ear, the rockshaft journaled thereto and having the cranks L and L2, the bar R, pivoted to the crank L and having the scrubbing-brush at its outer end, and the crank-shaft II, journaled to the ear and connected to the crank L2 of the roekshaft, whereby the latter may be oscillated, for the purpose set forth, substantially as de'- scribed.
8. The combination of the car having the supportiiig-rollers, the snds-boX, and the seat, the rock-shalt L, journaled to the ear and having the cranks L and L2, the rod It, connected to the crank L and having the scrubbingbrush at its outer end, and the crank-shaft Il,
ionrnaled to the car and having the crankwheel K, and the pitman-rod connecting the said crank-wheel with the crank Iil of the rockshaft, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in a scrubbing-machine, of the rock-shaft having the crank-arni, andthe spring-rod It, attached to the said erankarm and carrying the scrubbing device, substantially as described.
5. The combination ofthe rod l?, having the notch R at its front end, with the scrubbing-brush having the notch 1" to receive the front end of the bar,and the locking-strap T2, to enter the recess R and secure the scrubbingbrush to the spring-bar, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I havehereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAS. NATHAN BA'IVS.
