Heretofore it has been necessary to place the pump-actuating mechanism directly above the well, owing to the inflexibility and the per`- pendicular movement of the piston-rod. This arrangement is, however, inconvenient and undesirable when the 'well is situated in a locality which is hilly or has other natural conditions that render access to the well difficult.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the pump can be actuated. at a distance from the well andwhich will eulable the actuating mechanism and the dischargespout to be located at any convenient poililit `without reference to the location of the we The invention consists to that end of the improvement which will be .hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

A. represents the well, B the pump cylinder submerged in the same, and C the supply pipe or conduit extending from the pump-cylinder to a standard, D. Thestandard D is arranged above the ground in the desired location and is provided with a receivingehamber of any ordinary construction and a dischargespout.'
The conduit C consists of straight pipe-sections 'which are connected theimrnsor angles of the conduit by eihows E. The latter" Serial No. 233,298. (No model.)
are preferably made square or rectangular in v cross-section and provided at their ends with i'langes'or rims e. The pipe-sections c of the conduit G are provided at their 'ends with screw nuts or collars c', which are formed with flanges c?, and the adjoining anges, e, of the elbows E are secured to the flanges c2 by bolts 03. A. suitable packing is interposed between the flanges c2 and e to forni a water-tight joint.
F represents the piston-rod, which isattached to the piston b of the pump-cylinder and extends upwardly through the conduit C and the standard D. The piston-rod F is com posed of sections f, which are made of about the same length as the pipe-sections c, and are united at the elbows or bends E of the supplyconduit by flexible connections G, which permit the requisite reciprocating movement of the piston-rod. The iexible connections G are each composed of a series of bars or links, g, which are pivoted together by horizontal pins or bolts h. g is preferably bent inwardly a distance about equal to the thickness of the bar, so as to form a depression in which the end of the nent adjacent link rests, thereby rendering the sides ofthe links Hush and forming a smooth joint.
`The last pair of links g of each connection G is connected by a cross-bar, fi, which is provided with a threaded opening, Qin which engages the threaded end of the adj ace'nt section c of the piston-rod.
J represent-s anti-'friction rollers mounted upon the pins or bolts h between the links g', andwhich run in contact with the inner surfaceof the elbows E. The rollers J support the piston-rod and prevent the same from coming in contact with'the sides of the elbows E, thereby reducing the friction between these parts and enabling the piston to be operated with greater ease. The rigid sections cof the c pistou-rod may also be provided 'with one or more anti-friction rollers, 7:, which rn n contact with tne inner surface of the conduit C. In this case each section of the piston-red is divided and connected by a bifurcated frame, Z, in which the roller le is mounted.
