Beit known that I, EDWARD A. OLMsrEAD, of the city, county, and State of NewYork, have invented'a new and Improved Vehicle- Heater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
'Ihis invention relates to vehicle-heaters,the object of the invention being to provide va compact, cheap, and durable heater that is more especially applicable lfor use as a tramway or Streetcar heater, but which maybe used in connection with other forms of vehi-v cles.
Reference is to be had .to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification', in which similariigures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of my improved form of vehicle-heater; and'Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, the leIthand portion of the heater being shown in vertical section. l j
In constructing the heater forming the subject-matter of'this application I provide a main boiler, 10, to which there is connected a secondary boiler or drum, 11, said connection being established by means of tubes 13, that are preferably arranged as best shown in Fig. 1.
The boiler 10 is 'mounted within a casing or jacket, 15, to which jacket there is secured a tire chamber or box, 16, the bottom of the forward portion of said box 16 being provided with upwardly-extending and longitudinallyapertured ridges 17.
Below the re-chamber 16 I arrange a lampbox, 20, said box being formed with an inlamp-box does not extend to the front wall of' said box, and in order that the space which would otherwise exist between the front edge of said bottom and the front wall of the box may be closed, I hinge a door or trap, 30, just in frontof the said bottom 19,as clearly shown in the drawings. This door or trap consists of an upwardly and forwardly extending portion, 2, anda vert-ical portion, 3, a horizontal ledge, 4, being formed, as indicatedin Fig. 1. The upper edge of the door is slotted,as shown at 5, and this slot receives a turn-button, 6, carried by the wall 21, the parts being so arranged that when the button is turned to the position shown upon the right in Fig. 2the door or trap will be held in its closed position. Theflamp'or fount, which is shown at 40, is of ordinary construction-that is, provided with wick-tubes 41, and wick-raising spindles 42, said spindles being in turn provided with thumb-wheels 43. In insertingthe fonnt or founts (for it will be understood that each wickdistinct fount) the door or trap 30 is openedthat is, swung to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l-after which the founts may be inserted within the lamp-box, the incline of the bottom of said box providing for the passage of the wick-tubes within the box. Afterthe founts have been inserted and pushed back to place the door is raised, and as the exteudingend of the fount is struck by the fount will be raised, so that when the door is `fully closed the fount will be in a horizontal position, the outer edge ofthe fount resting y upon the ledge 4 ofthe door 30. The wall 21 is formed with slots 6, through which the spindles 42 pass, similar `slots or recesses being formed in the upper edge of the door.

If deemed advisable, the sight-holes that are covered by plates of glass, as 44, may be formed in the sides of the tire-chamber,and the draft of the lamp may be regulated by slides 45, arranged to be adj usted so as to regulate the amount of air thatis admitted through the apertures 46 of the lamp-box 20. Then the lamps are in position for use, theywill occupy dra\vings-that is, their wicktubes 41 will pass upward through the slots 23 of the diaphragm 22, the upper ends of the wick-tubes entering the recesses formed by the ridges 17. Although I prefer that the main and the auxiliary boilers should be kept filled with water, it will be understood that the device would operate if the water should be materially diminished in quantity. A safety-valve, 60,is provided to prevent any undue pressure upon the boiler, and a filling tube or nozzle that is closed by a cap is arranged in connection with the auxiliary boiler ll, this arrangement being shown at 70. The heat generated by the lamps passes upward and about the boiler, as indicated by the arrows shown in Fig. 2, the waste products of combustion being carried oi through a smokestack, 80.
In arranging the heater in connection with a tramway or street-car the parts are relatively adjusted, as indicated in Fig. 2, wherein 100 represents the ooring of the car.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-x l. In a vehicle-heater,the combination,with the lamp-box provided with the inclined bottom, of the curved door hinged to the forward end of said bottom, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In avehicleheater,the combination,with the lamp-box provided with the inclined bottom, of the door hinged to the forward end of said bottom,and having a curved portion, 2, a ledge, 4, and a vertical flange, 3, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a vehicle-heater, the combination of the following elements, viz: lamp box 20, having inclined bottom 19, a door, 30, a diaphragm,22,slottcd as described, and a combustion-eha1nber, the bottom of which is provided with longtudinally-slotted ridges 17, substan tiall y as described.
