IMPROVED COMPOSITION FOR SIZING AND STIFFENING FLOOR-CLOTHS, dc.
Specification forming part of Lettcrs Patent No. 36,794, dated Ociober 28. 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. B. POWERS, of Lam singburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State seed or any other drying-oils, to be applied to canvas used in the manufacture of floor oilcloths, or to other textile fabrics or paper.
My composition is made by mixing a quantity of lime, with or without drying-oils,with blood as it comes from the veins of cattle or other animals, in about the following proportions: Blood, two parts; lime, one part, by weight; or the composition may also be made by dissolving the lime in water and mixing the lime-water with the blood. The proportions which I have named above must be varied for different kinds of blood, and according to the quality of lime. After the lime has been perfectly mixed with the blood, orin case lime-water is used after said solution has been intimately mixedwith the blood, the compo sition is ready to be used; and it must be remarked that it ought to be used up within a few hours, as it sets or hardens so much as to be unfit for the purpose intended. The oil may be added after the lime has been intimately mixed with the blood.
