COLLECTING DEVICE ESPECIALLY FOR TRANSVERSE FOLDERS FOR WEB-FED ROTARY PRINTING PRESSES The present invention relates to a collecting device particularly for transverse folders of web-fed rotary printing presses.
Webs of material, generally printed several times, emerging from such a press are as a rule folded longitudinally by means of former folders, and are thereupon cut into given lengths by rotary cross-cutters and then either immediately folded in a transverse direction, or else several products are collected, for instance, on a collecting cylinder which may bear the opposing knife of the cross-cutter, and these products are only then folded together. As is known, the maximum speed of operation of web-fed rotary printing presses depends extensively on the following units and in particular on the cross-cutter, collecting and folding devices.
The increase in the output of collecting devices has been opposed by the demand for thicker and thicker packages to be collected. Due to this, and as a result of the ever increasing speeds of rotation, the forces of momentum and the wear are immensely increased.
In another respect, it has become known from German Pat. No. 851,804 to associate with the puncturing needles of collecting cylinders, spring-movable ledges by which the sheet ends are lifted somewhat from the wall of the cylinder. That is, these ledges however do not act on the punctured needles or the course of their movement but rather the lifting of the products from the wall of the cylinder takes place, so that the products move away from the cutting lines, i.e., from the knives of the transverse cutter.
For the pressing together of the products upon the needling there has also become known from German Published Specification No. l,l93,5l7, collecting cylinders which have spring press rails also extending parallel to the axis of the cylinder and protruding beyond the puncture needles. In this way, the slitting of the sheets or products to be taken up at the places of passage of the needles is reduced even if the path of movement of the puncture needles due to wear or the like no longer precisely meet the requirements.
Furthermore, from German Publication No. 1,436,520, there have become known devices of said type in connection with which there are used puncture needles which have, at the end of the corresponding conical part, annular shoulders with which the products can be raised to such an extent that the grippers of the delivery cylinder can place themselves below the products. These annular shoulders are rigidly connected with the puncture needles so that they can be raised and lowered only together with the puncture needles.
All of these known devices have the disadvantage in common that the length of movement of the puncture needles is too great so that the forces of inertia which occur with the ever-increasing needle paths and higher speeds of rotation, can no longer be controlled, or set limits for the output.
In order to prevent the product from slipping off from the puncture needles, the latter must in any event be a certain amount longer than required by the thickness of the products, which in any event further increases the required needle path.
For the transfer of the product to the next cylinder, it is necessary to pull the puncture needles out of the product to be released at the time within an extremely short period of time. Particularly in the case of these particularly rapid and relatively large lift movements, there now occur, however, the aforementioned high forces of inertia as a result of which a precise course of the movement between cams and cam rollers is no longer assured. At these places there arises excessive pressure, springing of the cam rollers, and accordingly excessive wear; in the final analysis, there even results, at speeds which for the other machine parts, in particular of the rotary printing press, lie definitely within the range of the possible, the destruction at least of the cam and the cam roller.
It is an object of the present invention to avoid the disadvantages of the prior art and to create a device which is of simple construction and which meets requirements for a further increase in output of the collecting device.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a device with which thicker products can be collected with a reduction in the lift movement of the puncture needles. The higher speeds of rotation of the collecting cylinder necessary for an increase in output are not in this connection to have an unfavorable effect on the forces of inertia occuring due to the movement of the tool.
It is yet another object to provide a collecting device which reduces the sizes of the movements in order to reduce the wear.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a collecting device wherein this result is achieved in the manner that each row of cam-controlled puncture needles, in itself known, has associated with it an oppositely moveable also cam-controlled stripping row. The strippers are in this connection preferably designed such that they grip, in fork-shaped form around the puncture needles or extend on both sides of the needles. The pivot shafts of the puncture needle row and those of the stripper row are staggered with respect to each other, and the cam rollers, as seen from the center of the collecting cylinder, are arranged in the same direction.
While the puncturing needles upon the release of the products only necessarily descend half the amount of the corresponding needle length necessary, at the same time, the strippers are lifted from the wall of the cylinder by the remaining amount so that the products can either be released in a shorter time or thicker products can be released in the same time. Since the two tools carry out their movements at the same time, but in opposite directions, and these movements are in each case carried out only over half the necessary distance, there results a substantial reduction in the forces of inertia and at the same time in the wear.
With the above and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a schematic illustration of a collecting cylinder in one position of the collecting tools'during the collecting; and
FIG. 2 is a similar view to that shown in FIG. I but in a position of the collecting tool at a time shortly before the release of the product.
Referring now to the drawings, a collecting device in accordance with the present invention, comprises a collecting cylinder 1 in which there is supported one pivot shaft 2 for each of the puncture needles 3 and one pivot shaft 4 for the stripper 5. The corresponding pivot shafts 2 and 4, respectively, are staggered. The puncture needles 3 extend during the collecting by an amount x beyond the circumference of the collecting cylinder 1 and are arranged rigidly on the pivot shaft 2 by means of the bell crank lever 6. The pivot shaft carries a roller lever 7 on an end projecting out of the collecting cylinder 1, which roller lever 7 is also rigidly connected therewith.
The roller lever 7 moves by means of a cam roller 8, over a cam 9 firmly connected with the machine frame (not shown) which cam has a lower surface 11 in each case at the place at which the needled product 10 is to be released.
In the drawing stripper 5 represents a row of strippers coordinated with each row of needles 3.
Firmly connected with the opposite inner wall of the machine, also not shown, there is a cam 12 which bears a high surface 13 by means of which the strippers 5 are briefly raised by means of a cam roller 14, a roller lever 15, the pivot shaft 4 extending on this side of the collecting cylinder 1 and a bell crack lever 16, at the time of the release of the product 10.
The puncturing needles 3 take up the product 10 in known manner. The latter is held fast as required over one or more revolutions on the collecting cylinder 1 and thereby assembled from one or more layers. Since the process of collecting is not the object of the invention, and for the sake of simplicity, the elements for the stopping of the action of the cams 9 and 12 are not shown.
As soon as the time of the release of the product 10 has been reached, i.e., when the product 10 has been taken over, for instance, by the folding blades of a folding device, the cam roller 8, as shown in FIG. 2, travels into the lower cam surface 1 l, and at the same time, the cam roller 14 on the other side of the collecting cylinder 1 travels onto the higher cam section 13 so that the pivot shafts 2 and 4 are turned in opposite directions as a result of which, finally the puncturing needles 3 are brought down to the size and the strippers 5 are raised by the same amount. In this way, the product is released.
While l have disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, it is to be understood that this embodiment is given by example only and not in a limiting sense.
