I. P. LAMBING. l
GBNTRIPUGAL PUMP.
Patented Aug-9, 188'7.-
PATENT OFFICE,
ISAAC P. LAMBING, OF IONE, CALIFORNIA.
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,919, dated August 9, 1887.
Application led February 2S, 1887. Serial No. 229,247. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ISAAC l). LAMBING, of Ione, Amador county, State of California, have invented an ImprovementV in Centrifugal Pumps; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact ldescription of the same. f
My invention relates tothe class of centrif ugal pumps; and my invention consists inthe combinations of devices which- I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a centrifugal pump in which there is no friction on the outer rim of the driver, and whose operation and power are purely centrifugal.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my inventionFigure 1 is a horizontal section of the driver, taken on the plane of the peripheral dischargeslot a', Fig. 2, and a plan of the receiving-casing. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of driver and receiving-casing.
A is the driver, consisting of the hollow circular piece or disk secured centrally to a shaft, C, by which it lis rotated. The under central portion of the driver is provided with an inlet suction-aperture, a, working within the material to be pumped. The outer portion. or rim of the driver is beveled or made with converging inclines, as shown in section in Fig. 2, and this beveled portion concludes with a short straight portion, in which is formed the peripheral slot 'or discharge-aperture a', extending entirely aroundrthedriver. Vithin the driver and arranged radially are the long partitions or diaphragms a2 and the intermediate short partitions, a3. These eX- tend centrally from near the outer rim of the driver, the former reaching to about the ,ver-l tical plaueof the dischargeaperture, while the latter extend butashort distance, asshown in Fig. l. These partitions, both long and\ short, are made wedgeshaped, with the apex or thin portion pointing centrally, and this construction makes the space or chamber between them inclined or tapering the reverse way-that is to say, with its smallest portion outwardly-thus providing, in connection B is the receivingcasing. It consists of an` annular tube orpipe, which is Xed in position outside of the plane of the driver and entirely separate therefrom, the two not coming i in contact. This casing is preferably formed with acomparatively straight portion on its inner side, `and has in said side, near the lower portion of it, a slot or opening, b, which extends all the way around it. This slot or opening is made funnelshaped and tapering inwardly, and the walls 'of the opening are preferably carried inward a short distance beyond the walls proper of the casing, as is shown in section, Fig. 2. This opening is directly opposite the peripheral opening in the driver when operating. From the casing extend the outlet-pipes b-, one or more in number, as the case may be.
The operation of my pump is as follows; A rapid rotary motion is imparted by suitable means to the driver. The material to be pumped is thereby sucked in through the inlet a, and by centrifugal force is thrown outwardly and radially into the several chambers of the driver and into their tapering nozzles, which are formed by the inclined rim of the driver itself and the wedge shape of the partitions, and out through the peripheral opening or slot a. It emerges therefrom in an annular and con tinuous sheet orthin jet, and crossing the inv tervening space is thrown forcibly into the opposing opening b of the receiving-easing, and at all points of'said opening in a continuous sheet or stream of an annular form. Its injection into and through said opening is of such force as to project it completely into the casing, therebyY forcing out previous material therein throughthe discharge-pipes b.
While a receiving slot or opening in the casingB of a straight form might be used, the funnel or tapering shape, as here shown, is preferable, as embodying and continuingthe principle of the nozzles.
The object of extending the walls of the opening b a little within the casing is to better provide against the tendency of the water or other material to return through said opening. y The'object of the partitions a2 and a, long and short, alternating as described, is to provide for the nozzle shape of the outer ends of the chambers.
Having thus described my invention, what IOC I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a centrifugal pump, a hollow rotating driver having a central suctionaperture and a continuons peripheral slot, and provided With wedge-shaped radial partitions or diaphragms of different length and alternating long and short, whereby radial chambers with tapering outer ends are formed, in combination with a iixed receiving-casing encircling the driver` and having a continuons receiving` aperture or slot in its side opposing the peripheral slot of the driver, substantially as herein described.
2. In a centrifugal pump, a hollow rotating driver having a central' snctionaperture and a beveled or converging inclined rim portion provided with a continuons peripheral slot or opening, and with radial partitions or diaphragms of a wedge shape and alternating long and short, whereby chambers are Yformed with tapering outer portions, in combination with a xed annularv receiving-casing encircling the driver and having on its inner side a continuous slot or opening opposing the slot or opening of the driver, substantially as herein described.
3. In a centrifugal pump, a rotating hollow driver having a suction-aperture and a continuous peripheral discharge-slot, in combination with a fixed annular casing encircling the driver and having in its inner side a continuous receiving opening or slot opposing the peripheral slot of the driver, said receivingopening being inwardly tapering or funnelshaped, with its walls projecting inwardly beyond the walls proper of the casing, substantially as herein described.
4. In a centrifugal pump, the rotatinghollow driver A, having the central suction-apertme, a, the beveled riin with the continuous peripheral discharge-slot a', and radial parti tions a and a, wedge-shaped and alternating long and short, whereby radial chambers are formed with tapering outlets, in combination with a iiXed annular receiving-casing, B, encircling the driver without touching it, and having on its inner surface a continuons re ceiving-slot, b, opposing the slot of the driver, said receiving-slot heilig of aninwardly-tapering or funnel shape, all arranged and operating substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
