BALING-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nasemasa, atea August 9,1887.
` Application filid June 13, 1887.
sti-iin Nd.' 241,204. (No model.)
To ally/171.0721, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, SARAH W.. TnAnUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard,
in the county of Macoupin 'and State of Illi-A nois, have invented a new and useful Improve ment in Ealing-Presses, of which the following is a specification. l
with a camshapcd slot in which works a fric-y tion-rollerjournaled at the end of a pitnian,
the other end of which is pivotally connected in giving motion to the cam-head. This cainto the plunger.
The invention consislsin certain vnovelieatures, hereinafteriirst fully described, and then poinledout in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate myinvention, Figure 1 isa'plan view of niy-iniproved baling-press. Fig. 2 isacenf tral vertical longitudinal section ot` the same,
'and Fig. Suis a detalfviewof one of thespringbuffers. .y l Referring to the drawings bylctter, A desig nates the press-box, constructed in the usual manner and of the usual or any preferred size. B designates lthe plunger working in the pressbox, and provided on its outer side with.
the integral lugsor projections C, which are `provided with vertical perforations, through which a pivot-pin, D, is inserted toxseeur'e'the end of the pitman Eto the plunger.
At one end of the press-box I secnrenpon theupper and lower sides of the same theY cross-bars a a, in which the king-bolt F is journaled. This king-bolt F has an angular base,
G, or lower end, which is provided with Vthe depending cylindrical projection g,"stepped in l tain the sweep in atrue horizontal position, I
provide the brace or connecting-rod I, one end the end of the pitxnan E.
5 the` pitman to the plunger.
`cured to the sweep -at length.
The operatingcam or lever-liead J is secu'red a proper point' of its tothe inner end of the lever or sweep H, and w is also supported by and secured to the upper endV of the angular portion of the king-bolt. By the employment of this construction I am enabled to obtain a positive and powerful pressure with a small expenditure -ot force, as the powerapplied to the sweep is not entirely consumed and appliedv directly to the calnhead .Ifbut is partially applied to overcoming the inertia. of the .king-bolt and rotating the same, and the rotation of the kingbolt assists headis provided with a canishaped` slot, K, in which works a friction-roller, L, carried by This pitma'n E consistsof t'wo parallel arms, ce, connected at their inner ends by a cross-bar, e', from which the perforatedoffset eZ projects rearwardly between the lugs C on the plunger, thepivot pin D being passed through the said offset to secure The outer ends of thelarius e e 'pass above and below the canihead J,v and the roller L, working in the slot K, isjournaled in and between thevsame.
M hfdesignate two braces-which have their upper ends secured to the upper corners of the press on opposite sides of the king-bolt and extend therefrom to the ground at equal angles. Upon these braces M, I secure the spring-buffers N, which are arranged in the path ofv the sweep II to 'limit the play of the saine, and thereby. shorten the Voperation of baling by preventing the sweep being carried to either side farther than is necessary, and

consequently saving theitime otherwise lost secured to and carried by the'free.
placed in the press-box in the usual manner,
and a horse or other draft-animal hitched to4 the sweep and driven alternately to theoppo site sides of the press. The cani-headis thus caused to force the l plunger inward upon the hay, as will be readily understood, and "each turn of the sweep causes the cam-head to force the plunger' inward and then withdraw it in position to permit the insertion ol an additional quantity of material.
lt is thought the advantages ol my i mp roved press will be readily appreciated without being particularly referred to in detail.
Having tlms described my in vcntion, what I claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The combination of the sweep H with the rigid braces M, and the spring-bullers secured to the braces in the patlrol' the sweep, substantially asset forth.
2. The combination of the sweep H with the rigid braces M, and the spring-bnllers secured to the braces in the path of the sweep, the said buffers comprising the springs O, secured to the braces, and the plates P, secured tothe springs O, substantially as specified.
3. The combination lof the press-box having the cross-bars a c at one end, with the plnnger working in the press-box, the king-bolt having the angular portion G, provided with the cylindrical projection g, stepped in the lower cross-bar, a, and the cylindrical portion extending up through and above the upper cross-bar, the sweep having a notched end to engage the said angular portion of the kingbolt, the -connecting-rod having one cnd secured to thc upper end of the king-bolt and ils other end secured to thev sweep, the camhead secured to the end of the sweep, and also secured to and supported by the angular portion of the king-holt and provided with a camshaped slot, and the pitnian connected to the plunger and carrying a friction-roller` working in said camshaped slot, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own l have hereto allixcd my signature in presence of two witnesses.
