Abstract
A wheeled carrier for supporting a conventional portable chain saw having a transverse handle near the front of the engine housing and a rearwardly projecting handle having a throttle trigger projecting therefrom. The saw is detachably mounted on the carrier at three points and the guide bar and cutting chain thereon project laterally from the carrier close to the ground. The throttle trigger is operated by cable control mounted on the carriage frame, and if the saw includes manual means for oiling the cutting chain, a similarly mounted cable control is provided for that purpose.

The saw is detachably mounted on the carrier at three points and the guide bar and cutting chain thereon project laterally from the carrier close to the ground. The throttle trigger is operated by cable control mounted on the carriage frame, and if the saw includes manual means for oiling the cutting chain, a similarly mounted cable control is provided for that purpose.
5 Claims, 3 Drawing figures WIIEELED CARRIER FOR CI'IAIN SAW This invention relates to portable chain saws having gasoline engines for driving an endless cutting chain around the peripheries of elongate guide bars, and has reference to a wheeled support for operation of a chain saw close to the ground. Generally, the invention is directed to means for detachably mounting a chain saw on a wheeled carrier, together with remote control means for operating an engine throttle. For use with chain saws which do not have means for automatically oiling the chain, a similar automatic control is provided.
An object of the invention is to provide means having three or more vertically and horizontally spaced points of engagement for detachably mounting a portable self-contained hand saw on a wheeled carrier.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wheeled carrier capable of rigidly supporting a chain saw close to the ground.
Another object is to provide, in addition to the foregoing objects, means laterally supporting the length of the chain guide bar with reference to the path of the carrier whereby the entire effective cutting length of the chain may be applied to the material being cut by the operator, as for example, when cutting brush or undergrowth.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. I is a perspective view of a wheeled carrier and a portable chain saw mounted thereon in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the assembly shown in FIG. 1, and
FIG. 3 is a broken perspective view showing means for remotely operating the engine throttle trigger and the chain oil dispensing button.
The chain saw illustrated is conventional and includes an engine housing 10 having a laterally projecting flat guide bar I l, around which a cutting chain I2 is driven by an engine, not shown. Mounted on a base plate I3, and near the inner end of the guide bar 11, there is a transverse U-shaped tubular lilting and balancing handle 14, herein referred to as the forward handle. A rearwardly extending handle I5 projects from the end and one side of the engine housing and is generally parallel with one side of the guide bar 11. On the inner surface of the handle there is a throttle trigger l6, and on the saw shown there is a spring biased button 17 for intermittently applying oil to the cutting chain 12.
The carrier illustrated in FIGS. I and 2 includes a pair of normally inclined tubular parallel shafts 18 having a transverse handle bar 19 connecting their upper ends. Obviously, the frame of the carrier may have a different configuration, not shown, and yet serve the intended purpose of the invention. The lower forward lengths of the shafts 18 are angularly formed so as to be parallel with the ground when the carrier is in use. An axle 20 is mounted on the shafis 18 between their inclined and horizontal portions and which axle has freely rotatable wheels 21 on its ends. A horizontal support bar 22 is welded or otherwise secured across the forward ends of the shafts l8 for holding the saw in operating position. Preferably, the support bar 22 is of channel stock and arranged with the channel sides projecting forwardly where they have vertically aligned notches 23 near one end of the bar for receiving one side of the forward or U-shaped handle 14. The rearwardly extending saw handle 15 is received in a notch 24 in the outer vertical edge of a forwardly and inwardly extending bracket plate 25 on the horizontal support bar 22. Clamps, preferably in the form of hook bolts 26 mounted one above the other, in the web of the channel support 22 demountably engage the above referred to side of the U-shaped handle 14, whereas another clamp, preferably in the fonn of a longer hook bolt 27, extends through the channel support 22 and bracket plate 25 where it detachably engages the saws rearwardly extending handle 15.
The throttle trigger l6 and oil dispensing button 17 are operated by control cables 28 and 29 and control levers 30 and 31 mounted on the respective shafls 18. As best shown in FIG. 3, the first control line 28 is connected with a lever 32 on a vertical shaft 33 mounted on extending angular end 34 of the bracket plate 25. A finger 35 on the lower end of the vertical shah 33 presses the throttle trigger 16. Similarly, the second control cable 29 is connected with a lever 36 on a shah 37 having a finger 38 for bearing against the oil dispensing button 17.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the saw may be conveniently mounted on and removed frOm the horizontal support bar 22, cuts close to the ground, that the maximum effective cutting length of the chain acts upon the material to be cut and that the assembled carrier and saw are conveniently maneuverable.
What is claimed is:
l. A carrier for a portable chain saw having a projecting flat guide bar and a driven cutting chain therearound, a transverse handle perpendicular to the guide bar, an extending handle spaced from the transverse handle and at least generally parallel with said guide bar and a throttle trigger carried by said saw, said carrier consisting of: an inclined wheeled frame extending substantially to the ground when in operating position, a horizontal support bar across the lower end of said frame, clamps arranged one above the other on one end of said support bar and engaging said transverse handle in a position to locate said guide bar parallel with the ground, and a clamp on the remaining end of support bar engaging said extending handle.
2. A carrier for a portable chain saw as defined in claim 1, the construction including control means mounted on said carrier frame and operatively connected with said throttle trigger.
3. A carrier for a portable chain saw as defined in claim I and wherein said portable saw includes means having a spring biased button for oiling said cutting chain, the construction including control means mounted on said carrier frame and operatively connected with said spring biased button.
4. A carrier for a portable chain saw as defined in claim I, the construction wherein said clamps are hook bolts mounted in said horizontal support and engaging said transverse and extending handles.
5. A carrier for a portable chain saw as defined in claim 1 and wherein said portable saw includes means having a spring biased button for oiling said cutting chain, the construction including first control means mounted on said carrier frame and operatively connected with said throttle trigger, and second control means mounted on said carrier frame and operatively connected with said spring biased button.

Claims (5)
1. A carrier for a portable chain saw having a projecting flat guide bar and a driven cutting chain therearound, a transverse handle perpendicular to the guide bar, an extending handle spaced from the transverse handle and at least generally parallel with said guide bar and a throttle trigger carried by said saw, said carrier consisting of: an inclined wheeled frame extending substantially to the ground when in operating position, a horizontal support bar across the lower end of said frame, clamps arranged one above the other on one end of said support bar and engaging said transverse handle in a position to locate said guide bar parallel with the ground, and a clamp on the remaining end of support bar engaging said extending handle.
2. A carrier for a portable chain saw as defined in claim 1, the construction including control means mounted on said carrier frame and operatively connected with said throttle trigger.
3. A carrier for a portable chain saw as defined in claim 1 and wherein said portable saw includes means having a spring biased button for oiling said cutting chain, the construction including control means mounted on said carrier frame and operatively connected with said spring biased button.
4. A carrier for a portable chain saw as defined in claim 1, the construction wherein said clamps are hook bolts mounted in said horizontal support and engaging said transverse and extending handles.
5. A carrier for a portable chain saw as defined in claim 1 and wherein said portable saw includes means having a spring biased button for oiling said cutting chain, the construction including first control means mounted on said carrier frame and operatively connected with said throttle trigger, and second control means mounted on said carrier frame and operatively connected with said spring biased button.
