.To all whom it may concern.:

Be it known that I, ADoLPH S. ELLIsoN, of the-city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Braid-Trimmings, of which the following is a full, clear, andexaet description.

My invention relates to an improvement in braid-trimmings, and has for its object to provide an article strong and durable, yet having a delicate light appearance.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure of the drawing is a front elevation of a piece of my braid-trimming.

In carrying the invention into effect a strip of braid of any desired width is crinkled and carried at an angleY downward, as at A, then bent upon itself' twice to form the opposite loops, c a', which' loops are secu red in position by warp-threads b. kled and carried down at an angle, as at'A, above mentioned, and two opposing loops, c a', are again made and secured in position, which process is continued until four or more crinkled zigzag inclined lengths of braid, A, are produced, according to the desired width ofthe trimming. The last length of braid A is bent uponl itself five times, forming thereby as many opposing loops, b' b, which loops are in the same horizontal plane, andare secured in position in similar manner to the aforesaid loops a a', and form the lowerI selvage edge of the trimming. The braid is now crinkled and carried 'upward in a length, B, at an inclina tion toward the top of the opposing lengthA and secured to said top, Vproducing the more or less V-shaped opening D. From this point the braid is bent upon itself totform two loops, a2 a3, in horizontal alignment with the loops a a', formed in the downward zigzag course of the braid. Another length of crinkled braid, B, is then carried at an inclination upward and united to the top of the opposite crinkled length A, forming thereby a second V-shaped opening, D, immediately over the lower similar opening, and so on until the top opening, D, is formed. At this point the braid is bent upon itself five times and five horizontally-arranged loops, b b2, are pro- The braid is again crin' duced, forming the top selvage in corresponding manner to the lower selvage edge. The braid is now carried downward again, as in the rst instance, and the exact operation duplicated throughout the length of the piece, producing series of aligning V-shaped openings, D, and a series of horizontal rows of opposing loops, a a ai a3, as shown in Fig. 1, the top and bottom selvage being formed by the loops b' b2.

The number of loops may be varied, if found desirable, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

In dening my invention with greater elearness I would state that I am aware that it is Anot new to form a trimming of cord or chenile which, being a flat elastic fabric, (in contradistinction to a hard twisted cord,) makes an entirely different article, in which the braid assumes a fiat wide full side view between the points of connection, and is narrowed or crinkled at the folded and connected points, making a full body and a somewhat irregular mesh with graceful folds. This trimming is capableof being washed and ironed without being impaired in beauty or structure, is perfectly flexible in all directions, which adapts it to be placed over irregular curves, can be fastened to a garment by a sewing -macliine, and is much cheaper and more durable than silk-,covered cord.
