Beitknown thatI, ERNEST A. OLDEN BUSCH, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Spring or Snap Clasps for Pocket-Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of snapclasps which severally comprise a back plate or bottom secured upon the body of a pocketbook, and provided with a'pin which is received in a' hole in the pocket-book flap, and a front plate or top which is hinged to the bottom plate or back plate, or to a piece secured thereto, and which closes with a snap upon the end of the aforesaid pin, thereby securing the lap of the pocket-book in place.

In clasps of this kind it is necessary to provide upon the top or front plate a bearer and a snap-lip, which serve, respectively, for the reception of a pintle or hinge-pin and to reoeive the impact of the spring. There are certain difiieulties dependent upon producing both the hinge-bearer and the snap-lip integral with the top or front plate, lalthough it is desirable in some cases to do so, and it is also very objectionable to secure the hinge-bearer and lip upon the top or front plate by solder.

According to my invention I provide the top with a radial bent tongue and a piece riveted thereto and forming together a bearer for the hinge-pin and a lip for the snap; and the invention will be hereinafter-more fully de scribed, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure I is a transverse seetionthrough a snap-clasp embodying my invention in one of its forms. Fig. 2 represents the blank from which the front plate or top is produced, and Fig. 3 represents a blank of the part which is combined therewith by riveting to form the entire hingebearer and snap-lip. Fig.v 4 is an edge view of the `top plate, including the hinge-bearer and snap-lip formed according to a modification of my invention; and Figs. 5 and 6 are views corresponding to Figs. 2 and 3 of the blanks which are necessary to produce this front plate or to'p with its hinge-bearer and lip; and Figs. f7, 8,'and 9 are views'simi'lar to Figs. 4,5, and 6, illustrating still another slight modication of my invention.

In the accompanying drawings, A designates the bottom or back plate, which, as here represented, has a spring, A', formed integral with it, as is shown and described in my pending application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 239,079, filed May 23, 1887.

B designates the frontplate or top,which is connected by a pin or pintle, b, with the fastening plate or piece O, which lies upon the outer side of the bottom A, and which has prongs c, which pass through the bottom A and serve to secure the device upon a pocket` book, as also described in my aforesaid application. The pieces C A may be connected by a pin, D, which is constructed to form a rivet, and against the end of which the top or front plate, B, closes.

My invention relates solely to the construction of the bearer b,which is formed upon the top or front plate, B, to receive the hinge-pin or pintle b, and to the snap-lip b2, on which the' spring A bears. The construction of these parts will be best understood from Figs. 2 and 3, taken in connection with Fig. 1.

AS shown in Fig. 2, the blank for the front plate or top, B, has formed integral with it a tongue, s, and has at the end a projection, o, and also has a perforation or hole, o. In Fig. 3 is represented a piece, BQ of metal,whieh has a tongue, o, and a hole or opening, o'. The tongue s is bent at approximately right angles to the top or front plate, B, as shown in Fig. 1, and the piece B is bent into U- shaped form, as also shown in Fig. 1. projection o of the tongue s being inserted through the perforation o of the piece B', and the projection o of the piece B being inserted through the perforation o in the tongue, the said projections are riveted over, thereby uniting the piece B firmly to the tongue s without solder, and forming the hinge-bearer b and the snap-lip b2, in part by the tongue s and in part by the piece B, united with said tongue by riveting.

In the construction shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 the tongue s has two perforations o at a suitable distance apart, and the piece B has two projections or spurs o at opposite ends. The tongue s is bent transversely to the plane of the plate or top B, and the base B being bent into U-shaped form in a plane passing The IOC

through the projections or spurs o, seid projections or spurs nre inserted through the perforations o' in the tongue s and firmly secured by riveting, and in this example ofthe invention the end b2 ofthe tongue forms the snaplip on which the spring A bears. It will therefore be seen that in this example, also, of the invention the hingebenrer b and the lip battre formed in part bythe bent tongue s and in part by the piece B.

In the example 0f the invention shown in- Figs. 7, S, and 9 the tongue s is longer than before described, and has in it a single perforation o', and after said tongue is bent into U-shitped forni, as shown in Fig. 7, the piece B', (shown in Fig. 9,) and having the projection or spur o, is placed, as shown in Fig. 7, with its projection or spur in the perforation o, and rinly secured therein by riveting. It will therefore be seen that in this example, also, of the invention the hinge-bearer b and the snap-lip bL are formed in part by the tongue s and in part by the piece B. i XVhat I- claim as my invention, and desiret secure by Letters Patent, is-
