To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR'K. MoRRIsoN,
- of South Acworth, county of Sullivan, and State of New Hampshire, have invented an 5 Improvement inaClamp-Operating Mechanisms for ButtonHole-Stitching Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve and make more positive the mechanism for moving thecloth-clamp employed in button- .holestitching machines.
United States Patent No. 303,557, dated ,August12,1884, describes a feeding or cam disk having at its under side a heart-cam which causes the movement of certain cross-slides to effect the movement of the cloth-clamp in the direction of the button-hole slit. The cam referred to is mounted upona stud of the uppermost frame, and its periphery is of such shape that, acting againsta stud carried by the'lowermost frame, the uppermost frame is caused to be moved upon the lowermost frame when the stitching is to be changed from one to the other side of the buttonhole and the end orbar stitching is being done, the lowermost frame being reciprocated at right angles to the length of the button-hole slit for a distance equal to thelength of the stitch from what is to constitute the edge of the button-hole backward therefrom, the cloth-clamp moving with it.
In the patent referred to the periphery of the feeding or cam disk is normally pressed toward the pin or stud on the lowermost frame by a spring. In the invention herein to be described the stud on the lowermost frame and the spring referred to are dispensed with, and instead I have devised means for positively moving the uppermost frame on the lowermost frame,and with it the stud on which is mounted the feeding cam or disk, whenever the stitching is to be carried from one to the other side of the button-hole being made. To effect this change in relative position of the parts,l have provided the feeding camdisk with a camgroove outside the heart-cam,and in this camgroove I have placed a roller-stud of a lever, jointed to the uppermost frame carrying the stud on which the saidfeeding cam-disk rotates, and this lever, preferably slotted and curved, as will be described, receives a stud carried atone end ofalink pivoted at its other end to the undermost frame, the stud carried at the free end of the said link being made as .a clamping-stud, so as to enable it to be connected to the said lever at any desired position between its ends, according to the distance it is desired to place apart the two parallel lines of so-called overstitching.
The particular features in which my invention consists will be hereinafter pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, I have shown only the lower half or part of the cloth-clamp.
The bed-plate A, having the guides a, the frame B, called the undermost frame, the stud or projection b at its under side, the link L, the lever H, to be vibrated byaswitch-cam, K, on the main shaft S, the frame 0, herein called the f uppermost frame, the slide-bar 0 J, attached to the rear partof the under member, T, of the cloth-clamp and enteringatransverse slot in the frame 0, and resting at itsv lower side on the frame B, the circular plate R, fitted into a circular opening or curb at the 5 upper part of the frame 0, the cross-slide M, the slide-bar N, provided with the roller-stud e, to enter the heart-cam groove f of the feeding cam-disk E, the slotted cover-plate D, attached by suitable screws to the curb of the frame 0, the stud I, fixed to the cover-plate and serving as the pivot for the cam-disk E, and the toothed wheel F and pawl to move it, and the upper member, U, of the cloth-clamp, are and may be all substantially as in the said patent, and so need not be herein specifically described. In the said patent the periphery of the feeding cam-disk I] was made camshaped to act upon a stud attached to the undermost frame, B, the edge of the said cam-disk being normally pressed toward the said stud by a spring. Herein the said cam-disk is provided at its under side with a groove, the parts 12 and 13 of which are connected, as shown in Fig. 5, the part 12 forming a part of a circle of less radius than the part 13, the parts 12 and 13 beingjoined by inclined portions 11.
The stud 1), extended upward above the frame B, serves as the pivotal point for the link 15, provided at its free end with a clamping-stud, 16, of usual construction, the said stud being herein shown as extended at its upper end througha slot, 17, in a lever, 18, pivoted at 19 on the uppermost frame, 0, the said stud 16 at its upper end receiving on a screw-threaded portion thereof a nut, 20, the stud being extended through a suitable washer, 21, at the upper side of the said lever.
The lever 18 between its ends has a projection, 22, provided with a roller-stud,23,which enters the groove 12 13 of the cam-disk, and as the said canrdisk is rotated about the stud I the cam-groove 12 13 moves the lever 18, to effect at the proper time as, forinstance, as the roller-stud 23 passes from the part 12 into the part 13 of the said cam-groove, or vice versaa movementofthe frame 0 longitudinally upon the frame B, the frame 0 during such movement carrying with it the entire mechanism located above the frame B, and also the clothclamp.
The movement of the cloth clamp, effected while the rollerstud 23 is passing from the groove 12 into the groove 13, or vice versa, causes the cloth-clamp and the material held by it to be so moved under the usual eyepointed needle as provided for in the said patented machine to enable the stitches to be made which are to constitute the bar for the end of the button-hole, and thereafter the needle descends in proper position to effect the stitching of the opposite or last side of the buttonhole to be stitched.
By changing the position of the clampingstnd 16 in the slot of the lever 18, or toward or from its pivotal point 19, the distance between the two parallel rows of overstitching constituting the opposite sides of the button-hole may be variedthe greater the distance of the said stud from the pivotal point 19 the greater such movement, and vice versa.
Fig. 2 shows the toothed wheel F removed, and in the said figure the dotted lines show the two positions of the lever 18 as moved by the rotation of the cam-disk E, the said figure also showing by dotted lines that the movement of the said lever by the rotation of the said camdisk also causes the frame 0 and all its attached parts, including the cam-disk and the cloth-clamp,to be moved upon the frame B in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2.
I claim- 1. The frame B, frame 0, and cloth-clamp operatively connected with it, the rotating cam-disk, and a link attached to the frame B, combined with a lever connected to the frame 0, the said link being joined to the said lever, whereby the rotation ofthe said cam-disk posi tively effects the reciprocation of one of the said frames and cloth-clamp with relation to the other frames, substantially as described.
2. The frame B, frame C, and cloth-clamp operative] y connected with it, the rotating cam-disk, and a link attached to the frame B, combined with a lever connected to the frame 0, the said link, and means to adjustably connect the said link with the said lever,whereby the rotation of the said cam-disk positively effects the reciprocation of the said frames and cloth-clamp with relation to the other frames, substantially as described.
