' L. D. LOUTHIAN.
MOTIVE POWER. No. 367,307; Patented July 26, 1887.
WITNESSES I JV V'EJV' TOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAFAYETTE D. LOUTHIAN, or KENNEDALE, TE As' MOTIVE POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,307, dated July 26, 1887.
Application filed January 19, 1886. Serial, No. 159,043. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LAFAYETTE D. LOU- THIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kennedale, in the county of Tarrant, State of Texas, have'invented certain ne'w'and useful Improvements in Motive Powers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in motive powers, wherein the frame, showing the apertures and the beam dotted in and having corresponding apertures,
and Fig. 3 a plan view ofa guiding-block.
The letter A designates a suitable frame upon which is mounted the shaft B, provided with a drive-wheel, C, and mounted in journals D. Pivotally mounted in the rear of this wheel is the slotted beam E, provided with a series of apertures, F, at one end, and at the other with a slot, G. At the end of the beam opposite the slot is a vertical plunger, H, which has an up and down movement in the block I, which is suitably grooved for this purpose, the connection between the beam and the plunger being made by means of two links, one mounted on the end of the beam and the other upon the plunger.
The letter J designates the shaft mounted on the frame near the plunger and provided with a small pulley, K, and having a crank, L, which slides within the slotted portion of the beam, and is providedat its other end with a balance or fly wheel, M, so as to give a steady and uniform motion tothe plunger when in operation.
The operation is as follows: Power being applied by means of the crank to the drivewheel 0, the pulley K, which is connected therewith by a belt, revolves and turns the shaft J. This, through the medium of the crank on said shaft, imparts an up and down movement to the beam E, which in turn gives the k same movement to the plunger.
It is to be observed that the beam E is provided with a series of holes near one end, and
the frame is also provided with a correspondbeam and the two linked together, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The improved motor described, consisting of the frame A,shaft.l3, journaled therein and provided with a crank, as described, drive. wheelO on said shaft, shaft J, journaled in said frame parallel withthe shaft B, pulley K on the shaft J, crossed belt connecting said pulley and drive-wheel, pivoted beam E, slotted at one end, fly-wheel M on the shaft J, crank L,sliding within the slot in the said beam, the grooved block I, secured to the frame, the plunger working in the groove in said block, and the double-link connection S between said beam and the plunger, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
LAFAYETTE D. LOUTHIAN.
