Description

G; W. vPEMESONS. PRESSURE REGULATOR.`
N0. 367,232. Patented July 26, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GALEN w. rEAEso'Ns, orv KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
PRESSURE-REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.37,232, dated J`u1y 261887.
I Application filed March 16, 1887. Serial No. 231,118. (No model.)
.To all whom, it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, GALE'N W. PEAEsoNs, a
citizen ofthe United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Regulators,
juxtapositon and in communication with the i pipes leading from the main or other source of supply, the wall or walls of said chamber being madevflexible, and connected to a valve which will close the circuit and shut oft' the flow when the walls of the chamber are distended by the pressure ofthe water, gas, or
steam within the chamber.
In the drawing, which is a vertical longif tudinal section through the center of the device, A indicates the pressure-chamber,which may be of any suitable or desirable shape, made in two parts, and the two parts provided at the outer edge with inwardly-proj ecting flanges a', and at the center with bosses a2 Vintegral therewith, and through the ribs which abut, the parts are joined together bybolts or screws a, with any suitable packing material interposed between the two sections, so as to form a tight joint. The walls B and Bl of the chamber are made elastic, so that they will be slightlybulged or distended when subjected to internal pressure, but'will assume their normal position when the pressure is removed.
C is a T-couplingsecured to the wall B', to which are secured the inlet and outlet pipes D and "E, respectively. The coupling C is provided with a valve-seat, b, in which is seated the valve c, said valve being connected to a stem, d, which passes through the cham ber A, and is secured in or to the wall B by means of the screw-threaded portion e and screw-nut f, or in any other suitable manner. The opening in the lower end of the T-coupling C is made larger than the stem of the valve, so that when the pressure of the liquid,
steam, or gas in the pipe E becomes too great 'it will'escape into the chamber A, distending the walls thereof, which draws the valve c down onto the valve-seat b, and thus cut off 'the supply from the pipeD. When the pressure has been released or exhausted ,from the pipe E, the walls of the chamber gradually collapse, forcing a portion of the contents of the chamber out throughthe opening around the stem d into the pipe E and lifting` the valve c from the seat b and placing the pipes D and E in communication again.
The narrow opening around the stem dpermits the contents of the chamber to escape without causing a vibrating or iiattening action of the sides of the chamber, as is the case with Inost of the devices of this class now in use.v
It will be noticed that the suppl y-pipe and also the exhaust-pipe are located outside of the chamber, so that all the water, steam, or gas does not have to pass through the chamber, and that the chamber is partially filled at all times with water, gas, 85e., thus renden ing the device extremely sensitive to variable pressure and causing it to act almost instantly, insuring a reliable pressure-regulator.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a device for regulating the flow of liquids or vapors, an elastic chamber comf posed of flexible disks with inwardly-projecting flanges and central bosses integral therewith bolted together, in combination with a valve-stem passing through one of said disks and adjustabl'y secured to the other, and a valve located in a valve-chamber, and the induction and eduction pipes connecting with said chamber, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the disks B B', constructed and secured together substantially as described, of the coupling C, forming a valve-chamber,and provided with induction and eduction pipes, the valve c, valve-stem d, and nut f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GALEN IV. PEARSONS.
