SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,212, dated July 26, 1887.

Be it known that I, JOHANN KLEIN, a subject of the Kingof Bavaria, residing at Frankenthal, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters; and I hereby declare that the followingisafull,clear,and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectionalview of my improved filtering apparatus. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal sectional View on line x x, Fig. 1. Fig. Bis a vertical sectional view of a portion of the apparatus, showing the communicating pipe. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional detail view showing the means for securing the separating-grate. Fig. isahorizontalsectional View of the same5and Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line x @c of Fig. 2.

My invention has relation to lters having a number of inlets and outlets in the sides, and having a number of filtering-sections alternating with open spaces; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a filter, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter M indicates a smooth metallic cylinder, having its bottom plate, A, provided with suitable axles for wheelsG, and havingaremovable top or cover, D, secured air-tight to the cylinder by means of bolts D', the lower ends of which may be secured to the bottom plate, and handwheels E and packing ring or gasket F.
Flanged rings G are secured at intervals upon the outside of the cylindrical casing,and the branches e and e of the feed-pipe or inletpipe II open, respectively, at the bottom of the cylinder and in one ofthe rings, and the branches a and a' ofthe outlet-pipes I open, respectively, in one of the rings and at the top of the cylinder, the cylinder having in this case two of these rings.
Aperforated plate, p, having feet J, is placed at the bottom of the cylinder, and a suitable filtering-.cloth is placed upon this plate,where upon a layer, K, of some suitable iltering Ina- I terial, is placed upon the cloth and is covered with another cloth or felt, L, upon which another plate, p, without feet is placed. A second set of perforated plates and filtering material is supported by the feet of the lower plate above this set, forming a space, N, between them, and a grate or circular frame, q, having radiating ribs, is placed upon the top of this set for the purpose of supporting the weight of the layers of h'ltering material above them. The rim of this circular frame is formed with perforations P at intervals, and bolts B,having handles at their inner ends,1it and slide in these perforations,having grooves y in their under sides, into which the ends, of screws x project, thesaid screws and grooves guiding the boltsA and limiting their play. The outer ends of these radiating bolts titinto sockets s in the iianged rings, having screwcaps Q in their ends, and the bolts serve to support the circular frames, of which there are two shown in the apparatus illustrated in the drawings. rIwo sets of filtering-plates and their interposed material are placed above the lower frame, whereupon another frame is placed upon the upper set, and still two more sets of plates and filtering layers are placed above this frame. It will now be seen that as the iiuid to be filtered is let in through the inlet-pipes it will pass into the spaces between the filtering sets, being thus distributed to the entire areaof the Vfiltering element, and the Huid may pass upward or downward and may after passing through two filtering elements pass out through the outletpipes.
Any gas or compressed air contained in the fluid may pass freely up through the filtering elements, and it is therefore only necessaryto have air-escape valves, R at the upper ends of the inlet and outlet pipes.
For the purpose of insuring the more perfeet escape of air or gases, and also for the purpose of expediting the iiual emptying of the iiuid in the tilter, I attach a vertical pipe, b, to the side of the cylinder, the said pipe having perforations c at each space between the iiltering elements, so that air or gas as well as fluids mayV pass from the spaces into the pipe, and the upper end of the pipe is open, so that air or gas may escape into the top of the cylnder and escape through an outlet-cock, S,iu the top.

As the pipe would bc liable to receive unfiltered uid through the perforated portions and carry it to a space or compartment having filtered fluid, the pipe is provided with a rod or core, w, having a groove, d, in one side, which may register with the perforated portions of the pipe, and thc lower end of .this core passes out through a stuffing-box, e, in the bottom of the cylinder, and is provided with an upwart'lly-curved handle, li, by means of which it may be turned.
A ilange, o, projects from the bottoni of the cylinder, and may be provided with marks e, indicating the open and closed position of the handle and of the core, the flange projecting over and protecting the handle. It will thus be seen that by turning the handle and the core the perforated portions of the'vertical pipe may be opened or closed, allowing the air and gas or the fluid to pass into the pipe, or preventing the duid from passing from a cour partaient containing impure fluid to a cour partinent containing pure and lltered tluid.
It will also be seen that as thc iiuid passes J in one direction from the lower branch of the inietApipc and in two directions from the other the filtering may be performed rapidly and perfectly, and by having all the perforated plates and the filtering material loosely supported iu the cylinder all these parts may readily be removed from the cylinder for the purpose of renewing them or cleaning them and for the purpose of cleaning the cylinder.
Having thus described my invention, l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a filter, the combination of a cylinder having ilanged rings at equal distances formed with alternating inlets and outlets, and having radiating sockets provided with removable sciewcaps, ltering elements in the cylinder alternating with spaces, circular frames placed in every other space and formed with radiating perforations registering with the sockets in the cylinder, bolts in the perforations, having handles at their inner ends and having longitudinal grooves in their under sides, and screws in the perforations, having their ends in the grooves of the bolts limiting their stroke and guiding them, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. t
2. In a filter, the combination of a cylinder having alternating filtering element-s and spaces, and having alternating inlets and out lets in every otherspace, avertical pipe having perforated portions at every space, secured at the side of the cylinder, and a core having a longitudinal groove registering with the perforated portions in the pipe, and provided with a handle for turning it, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. In a iltcr, the combination of a cylinder having alternating filtering elements and spaces, a vertical pipe secured to the side of the cylinder, and having perforated portions registering with the spaces, a core or rod within the pipe, having a longitudinal groove corresponding to the perforated portions of the pipe and passing out through a stuffingboX in the bottoni of the cylinder, an upwardlycurved handle, and a semicircular shield or ange at the bottom of the cylinder over the handle, having marks for the two positions of the handle, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
