SWING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367.204` dated July 26', 1887.

f act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referl ence being had to the accompanying drawings,

and to the letters and figures or' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Ihe specialpbject of the invention is to construct a swing in such manner -that it may be worked with the hands with ease and safety, either sitting or standing on the footrests.

In the drawings, A represents the support- 'ing-frame, and B the pivoted seat-frame, both of which are substantially the same as shown in my application No. 210,895, filed August 14, 1886.,l

O is the seat, which may be rigid or piv-l ted, and of which there may be two, placed so asto have a common back, or one only.-

VD are arms pivoted at their rear to t-he swinging bars B' B', and each connected at its front end with the diagonally-opposite ends a of the supporting-frame by the ropes E E, which may be fastened in the rings a'. The arms D D are connected at their front endsV bythe bar D', whichforms a handle, which is grasped-by the swinger, so as to propel himselfl back and forth by a union of his muscular power and his weight. He is thus able to graduate his movements with much less danger, with more accuracy, and with much less fatigue, while the muscles of the whole body are more or less exercised and the strain is not thrown so entirely upon the legs and the muscles of the lower part of the body as when" a treadle is employed.

as to correspond with the distance out to whichv the handle D is adjusted.

G G are foot-rests pivoted at the rear ends to the pivoted bars B', and connected with the brace-bars B2 by buckle-straps g g, so Athat they may be raised to or lowered from the seats, according to the lengthof leg ofthe swinger.

The swing as thus constructed is found in practice to operate with great facility, with wonderfully little physical exertion, and with scarcely any liability to accident of any kind.-

Children may be safely trusted to amuse and exercise themselves without fear that they will fall ont or hurt themselves in any way.

Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, isl 1. In a swing, the combination, with the frame A', ropes E, and pivoted bars B' B', of the arms D D, pivoted to said bars above theseat at their-'rear ends'and provided in front Vwith the handle D', as shown, and for the purpose described.

2. The combination, with the frame A, swing-bars B', and ropes E, having the hooks and eyes ff', of the arms D D, slotted at their front ends and pivoted at their rear- `ends tol the swing-bars B', the connecting handle-piece D', held adj ustabiy in said' slots by the eyebolts F, whereby said handle-piece and ropes may be correspondingly adj usted,as described.
