CUTTER-BAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,190, dated July 26, 1887.

To all whom Z may concern:

Be it known that I, VVALLAOE B. COMSTOOK, of Allendale Center, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Cutter-Bar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The obj ect of myinvention is to provide a new and improved device for fastening the cutters on the cutter-bars of mowers and reapers, so that the cutters may be quickly removed for grinding or other purposes.

The invention consists of removable staples for holding the said removable cutters on the bar and a key for locking the. said staples in position on the said bar.

The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan View of a cutterbar in part, showing the cutters held thereon by my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the same on theline was of Fig. 1. Fig. .l is an endelevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the outer end of the bar, showing the look ing device for the key. Fig. 6 is a plan view of one of the cutters, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the staples for fastening the cutters to the bar.

The bar A, of suitable length and shape, is provided on its under side with a groove, B,

into which fits a key, 0,, inserted in the said slot or groove B from the outer end of the said bar A. The outer end of the key Ois provided with a notch, O','in'to which fits apin, D, passing through an aperture in the bar A, and secured to the free end of the spring E, fastened by suitable means to the front edge of the bar A, as shown in Fig. 5., 7

Each cutter F is provided with two slots, F F, through which pass the side arms, G, of the U-shaped staple G. Each of the said arms G also passes through avertical slot formed in the middle of the bar A, and each arm G is provided near its lower end with an aperture, Gflthrough which passes the key 0.

the said key passes through the apertures G in the said arms G of the staples G, whereby the cutters are fastened to the bar A and the staples are locked in position. \Vhen the key has passed completely in, the pin D engages the notch O in the key 0, and thus locks the key in place on the bar A.

The eye H, which connectsin the usual manner with the devices for imparting motion to the bar, is also fastened to the bar A by the key 0, by providing the said eye with an ex-.

tension, H, havingaseries of slots correspond ing to the slots in the cutters and the bar A. The eye and its extension H are placed on top of the cutters F, near the inner end of the cut- 'ter-ba'r, and the staples G, having side arms,

G, are passed through the slots in the extension H, the respective cutters F, and the slots in the bar A, and then the key O,when passed through the apertures in the side arms, G, of the staples G, holds the extension H and the cutters F in position on the bar A. The lower ends of the side arms, G, are flush with the ,under side of the bar 'A.

In case that one of the cutters F should break, it couldbe easily and quickly replaced by removing the key 0, which is unlocked by pressing the spring E outward, so that the pin D disengages the notch C. All the cutters can be removed when the key is withdrawn, by removing the. staples G, for cleaning or other purposes.

Instead of using staples'as described, I may employ bolts with flat heads, and having an aperture in the shank through which the key 0 may pass.

Instead of using one long key, I may employ two, one running from each end of bar A and meeting in middle of bar A, or even more than two; or any number of keys may be obviously employed (as the key is of itself an old element) without departing from my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

2. In a cutter-bar, thecornhination, with the perforated bar and cutters seated thereon, of to separate staples passing through said cutters and bar and holding said cutters uponsaid bar, and a key running lengthwise under the bar for looking the said staples on the said bar, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a cutter-bar, the combination,with the perforated bar and cutters, of the eyeblock having a perforated extension overlying and matching the perforations in the bar and cutters, separable staples passing through and 20 holding said bar, cutters and eye-block extension, and means for locking the staples, substantially as described.

4. In a cutter-bar, the combinatiomwith the perforated bar, of the perforated cutters, the

23 staples passing through the perforations of the bar and cutters, and a key located beneath the bar for fastening the said. bar and cutters, subsiantially as described.

o. In a cutter-bar, the conibination,with the bar having a longitudinal groove and vertical slots and cutters having slots, of staples passing through the slots in the said cutters and in the said bar, and a key held in the said longitudinal groove of the bar and passing through apertures in the said staples, substantially as shown and described.

6. In acntter-bar, thebar A, having thelongitudinal groove B, and the cutter F, having the slots F, in combination with the staples G, having the apertured side arms, G, and the key 0, held in the said longitudinal groove B and passing through the apertures in the said staples G,substantially as shown and described.

7. In a cutter-bar, the eoinbinatioinwith the bar A, cutters F, and staples G, of the key 0, having the notch C, the pin D, adapted to engage the said notch, and the spring E, carrying the said pin D and held on the said bar A, substantially as shown and described.
