UNITED S ATES PATENT OFFICE..
CHAFLES H. CAStVELL, OF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND.
BOILER.
V SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367.18.), dated July 26, 1387.
Application filed December 3!, 1596, Serial xvii-l3 H5. (No model.) I
described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding puts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement with parts broken out. Fig. 2 is arcar elevation of the same with parts broken out.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same with parts of the casing broken out. Fig. at is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line w of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a sectional plan View of one side of the same on the line y 3/ of Fig. 4- with' part of the other side-in plan view.
My improved boiler A is preferably placed in thefurnace constrnctcd as shown, and provided with the front doors, (J, the gratebars 1), and the chimney i below the open ing ofwhich is held the perforated shield E,
to prevent a too rapid escape ofthe products of combustion.
'lhe boiler A is provided on its rear end with the upright cylinder l, having the mam hole Fofanyapprovcd construction. 0n lop 01' Lll cylinder T is laced the stegtm tome l I, provided with the out-lets ti, connected in the usual manner with the various parts of the machinery to be driven. From the upper part ofthe cylinder F leads the middle tube, ll, toward the t'ront,\\'hi ch conncctsat its front end with the sidcwisecxtending branch tubes I and I, having short branch tubes F connecting with the front chambers, J, J, and J",
which are connected with each other bypipes J. The chambers J,J,and J are supported in any suitable manner at their lower ends in the furnace A.
From the cylinder F branch sidewise the tubes K and K, connected by the short branch pipes K with the rear chambers, L and L, which are connected at their inner sides by the pipes L with the cylinder F, and at their bottoms by the bent pipes L also with the said cylinder F. The inner sides of the chambers J and J" are connected with the'inner sides of the chambers L and L by means ofthe horizontal pipes N and N, respectively, and the in ner side ofthe chamber Jis connected by the horizontal pipes O with the upright cylinder F.
It will be seen that the cylinder F, the chambers J, J, J", L, and L, and the several connecting tubes and pipes are all esposcd to the actionfif the heat generated on the gratebars D of the furnace A,thus obtaining a'large heating-surtacc, and at the same time establisbinga free circulation of water in all the chambers, tubes, pipes, and cylinder-F.
The outer covers of the chambers J, J, J, L, and L are removable, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to permit of easy access to the pipes N and O for cleaning orfor other purposes. I
The boiler is charged with water through the inlet-pipes 1, opening into the cylinder F near its bottom.
it will also be seen that the boiler aseonstructed takes up very little room,
Having thus described my inveution, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters- Pat ent, is-
.l. in a boiler, the combination, with the cylinder F, of the tubes II, I, l, K, and K, and the chambers J, J, J", L, and L, connectcd with the said tubes, respectively, substantially as shown and described.
3. ln a boiler, the combination, with the cylinder 1 and the tubes ll, l, l', l\'., and ii, of the chambers J, J, J", L, and L, connected with the said tubes, respectively, and the pipes N and N,co nnecting the said chambers J and J with the chambers L and L, respectively, substantially as shown and described.
3. ln a. boiler, the combination, with the cylinder F and the tubes ll, Ll, .l ,.and K, of the chambers J, J, J, L, and I], connected with the said tubes, respectively, the pipes N and N,connecting the said chambers J and J" with the said chambers L and L,andthe pipes Q,connecting the said chamber J with the cylinder F, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a boiler, the cylinder 1, the tubes ll, 1, and I, and the short branch pipes l'',extendingdownward from the said tubes land I, in combination with the chambers J, J, and J" and the short connecting-pipes J, substan tially as shown and described.
5. In a boiler, the cylinder 131111., lnbes K. and K, and the shortbraneh pipes 11, extending downward from the said tubes 1i and Ii, in combination with the rear chambersJJ and L. and the pipes L and L, connecting the said chambers L and L with the said cylinder I substantially as shown and deserilwd.
6. In a boilenthe cylinderF, provided with 15 the man-hole I the steam-dome G, held on top of the said cylinder Ifltlnztnbesll, I, I, K, and K, and the short branch pipes I and K", in combination with the chainbcrsJ, J, J, L, and L, the connecting-pipes J", L", and L, and the horizontally-extending pipes O, N, and N, substantially as shown and described.
