FRANK NEARING, OF SOHUYLKILL HAVEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILWAY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,155, dated July 26,1887. I
Application filed April 16, 1887. Serial No. 235,071. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK NEARING, of Schuylkill Haven, in the county of Schuylkill and-State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Railway-Plow, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip- The object of this invention is to provide a practical truck or railway plow for use in ditching and excavating alongside a railwaytrack; and to this end my invention consists, principally, of a truck constructed to run upon a railway-track, combined with plows con- 'nected by means of pivoted side bars to the frame of the truck, so as to run in contact with p the ground at either side of the track.
The invention also consists of means for raising and lowering the plows and-of tilting them upon the truck; and the invention further consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed. i 7
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevationof my new railway-plow, showing the plows in contact with the ground, in full lines, and one set of plows elevated and the other tilted upon the truck, in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the plow. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 is a detailed View showing a modification of the meausfor elevating the plows.
A represents a truckhaving astrong frame, consisting in this instance of the longitudinal side bars, a a, front and rear platforms, 1) 1), central cross-pieces, c c, and central beam, d, attached to the cross-pieces c 0. Attached to the front end of the beam of by the heavy pin or bolt 6 are the twobars B B, which reach to opposite sides of the truck, and attached to the rear end of said beam by the pin 6" are the two similar bars, B B. The bars B B, at each side of the truck, have pivoted at their outer I J for elevating the plows, I may employ gearends a rod or plate, 0, to the under surface of which is secured a plow, D, and connected to each rod or plate 0 by an arm, E, and diagonal brace E is another plow, E. The two plows D E constitute a gang upon each side of the truck, and are constructed to throw the to slide.
stood from Fig. 1. The plows D are each braced from the frame or bars B by a bracerod, F, which is slotted at f to engage with a stud, f, on which the brace-rod is permitted This rod maintains the desired angle between the bars B and the plows, and must be detached when the plows are hoisted upon the frame of the truck, as shown in dotted lines at the left in Fig. 1. The plows are raised and lowered by two front levers, G G, and two rear levers, H H, each attached to a shaft, J, provided with an arm, J. The shafts J are held in keepers secured to the upper surfaces of the platforms 1), and the arms J reach outward and impinge upon the under surface of the side arms, B B, so that when the levers G and H are turned the arms J will lift the arms B B and with them the plows D E. A notched crest, .K, is provided for each lever G H, and'each lever is provided with a catch, 9, to engage with the notches of the crest, so that the plows may be held at any desired elevation from the ground.
The truck and plows may be drawn along the track by horse-power, a locometive, or a stationary engine attached to the chain L, which is attached to the plow-bars by the hooks h, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
-When it is desired to tilt the plows ovcr upouthe truck, as shown in dotted lines at the left ofFig. 1, the motive power will be attached to the chain M, which passes back under the frame of the truck, where it is connected to the side chains, M M','which pass up over the pulleys j j, journaled in the cross head N, and pass thence out to the outer ends of the arms E of the plows E, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. By thus drawing upon the chains M M the gangs of plows upon both sides of the truck will not only be elevated,
but will also be turned over upon the frame of the truck in convenient position for transport ing from place to place.
Instead of using an arm, J, upon the shafts on the shaft J, and the ratchet-wheel s. The lever G is provided with a spring-pawl, q, to engage with the ratchet-wheel for turning the same, and a stop-pawl, 1, is secured to the platform I) in position to engage with the ratchet-wheel for stopping, and holding it at any desired position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The plows D E, pivoted to the bars B B, said arms being pivoted to the frame of the truck A, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the plows and the pivoted bars to which they are connected, of levers fulcruined upon the truck for elevating the plows, substantially as described.
8. The truck A, provided with the crosshead N, in combination with the chains M M, the side bars, B B, and the plows D E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The frame of the truck provided with bars B B, in combination with the plows D E and the braces F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The beam 0, provided with a plow, D, and with the side pieces, E E provided with the plows E, in combination with the bars l3 l3, pivoted to the frame of the truck, substantiall y as described.
FRANK NEARING.
