SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 367,032, dated July 26, 1887.

Serial No. 909,563. (Model) To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, OREN FIsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in brushes, and is an improvement on the brush described in my application for Letters Patent of the United States filed January 30,1886,

The present improvement relates particularly to flat wall whitewash or calcimine brushes; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims. I

In the drawings, Figure l is a sectional view of a brush embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the ferrule or band. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the same with the bristles removed. Fig. 4 is a detailed transverse sectionalview of the same.

A represents the ferrule or band, which is made of cast metal. The sides a of the said ferrule are arranged parallel with each other, and are connected by the curved end walls, b. At a suitable distance from each end of the ferrule is formed a transverse brace, c, which connects the side walls together. These braces are arranged about midway between the opposite edges of the side walls of the ferrule, and have their sides inclined toward each other, thus rendering the said braces V-shaped in cross section, their upper edges being broadest and their lower edges being sharp.

Obtuse-angledincisions or recesses d are made in the lower sharpened ends of the braces to receive the correspondingly-shaped upper side of the center piece or bar, B. This center a piece or bar is made of metal, and a number of D represents the handle of the brush, which is provided at its lower end with the usual broadened end, f, to bear upon the upper side of the top piece and brace the handle thereon, and from the center of the lower edge of the said web depends a circular stud, g, which is made with the handle and fits in the opening A screw, h, is secured in the lower end of the handle, and extends through the center of the stud and projects outwardly therefrom. This screw enters a threaded opening made in the center of the center piece, and by turning the handle the said screw clamps the said center piece and top piece firmly on the lower and upper edges, respectively, of the braces 0, so as to secure them firmly to the ferrule.

The bristles are secured to the ferrule by having their upper ends clamped between the center piece or bar and the top piece,assh0wn, and as fully described in my before-mentioned application. Vhile the top piece and center piece are being clamped upon the bristles a severe strain is brought to bear against the sides of the ferrule, tending to force them outwardly and apart, and in order to strengthen the ferrule to hold its sides in place, I have provided the integral transverse braces in the ferrule, as hereinbefore described. By making the said braces V-shaped in cross-section they act as wedges to force the upper ends of the bristles firmly in the ends of the ferrule and in the central portion thereof between the braces, thus assisting in securing the bristles in the ferrule.

My object in providing the lower side of the top piece with the transverse grooves or recesses to receive the upper edges of the braces is to assist in seating the said top piece firmly in the upper side of. the ferrule.

Having thus described my invention, I claim---- 1. In combination with the ferrule or band having the transverse braces provided with the incisions or recesses din their lower edges, the sides of the'braccs being inclined, the top piece having the grooves on its under side to receive the upper edges of the braces, the center piece fitting within the recesses d of the braces, and the screw connecting the center 100 piece to the top piece, as set forth.

2. In a brush, the ferrule having the transverse braces, in combination with the top piece having the transverse grooves on its uir derside to receive the upper edges of the braces,

the center piece bearing under the braces, 5 the handle arranged on the top piece, and the clamping-screw depending from the handle and extending through the top and center pieces to secure the parts of the brush to gether, substantially as described.

3. The combination of the ferrule having the transverse braces provided with the incisions or recesses d in their lower edges, with I the center piece adapted to fit in the said recesses, and the top piece on the upper edges of the braces; and means to clamp the said 15 center piece and top piece together, substan:
