Abstract
An automobile hood lock device to keep the hood locked. This consists of an arm fastened to a bolt which is already on the hood. This arm goes through a plate, with a circular hole, which is fastened to a bolt already on the body of the car. The arm is then secured by a padlock.

1 AUTOMOBILE HOOD LOCK DEVICE I BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Simple installation, which can be mechanicalability. 2. This device attached to thebolts which are already in the car. 3.-This device embodies a principle which makes it opera- 'tional, when fitted. to the bolts already in the car. This principle is that the plate has a round hole which permits done by anyone with no the arm to enter it from a 360 circle. Therefore, the bolts placed on the car in any position must be in line with this 360 circle. The arm may be shortened or extended from the bolts in order that it may penetrate the circle.
. This device is adaptable to most models and makes of cars by shortening or extending the'arm and plate. It may be made in fixed lengths for a particular car, when the bolt set up remains the same for several yearsJHowever if the bolt set up is changed slightly on newer models, instead of making new fixed length arms and plates for the new model each time, an adjustable device may be constructed with the horizontal and vertical length of the arm, and the length of the plate able to be adjusted,
longer or shorter by hand, during installation.
Then the adjustable device could be used for more years cars, without making a new fixed one each time a model is slightly changed.
5. This device prevents the padlock from swinging back and forth and doing'damage to the radiator, condenser and grill, while the car is in motion, and prevents rattling.
This also keep the lock forward, away from the radiator and condenser, and this is very importantwhen there is a condenser for air conditioning and there is very small space.
This is accomplished by extending the arm below the base of the lock, which keeps the lock stable, and prevents swinging. v
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The apparatus of the present invention consists of:
l. The hood lock arm, which is a steel strip or round rod of sufficient body to prevent cutting-The length must be long enough to reach from the bolt in the hook to the hook lock arm plate.
This arm must have a 90 angle in it at some location, to allow it to fit the bolt horizontally, and penetrate the plate vertically.
2. The hood lock arm plate, which is a steel strip of sufficient body to prevent cutting. The width must be wide enough for a round hole to be made, to receive the hood lock arm from any directiomand also to allow the arm to travel three times the arm's width from one side of the hole to the other. This is because the, hood arcs and causes the arm to arc. 1
3. The'hood lock arm padlock area is the area where the padlock is inserted through the hood lock arm, in order to secure the arm through the plate.
. The stabilization of the padlock to prevent swinging and rattling, and keep the lock forward of the arm and away from the radiator. This is accomplished by making the hole in the arm at a sufficient distance from the end of the arm, so that when the lock is inserted, the base of the lock remains a short distance from the end of the arm. This keeps the lock stable and prevents the lock from going to the other side of the arm where it can do damage to the radiator.

With the hood open a few inches, just enough to get your hand in, you install the padlock at a position where the shackle of the padlock has contact with the bottom of the hood lock arm plate. You then close the hood and the padlock travels down with the arm. When the padlock comes up again, it allows the hood to open a few inches to remove the padlock.

- DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT A first embodiment of the hood lock device, as shown. in FIG. 1, includes the hood lock arm 1, a steel strip bent to a angle and sufficiently long enough to reach from BOLT 4, through PLATE 2. This arm has a hole in one end large enough to allow BOLT 4, to penetrate it. This arm has a hole some distance from the other end, which the shackle of the padlock penetrates. This hood lock arm is secured to the hood of the by BOLT 4. v
The hood lock arm plate 2, a steel strip long enough to reach from BOLT 5, and engage the lower end of the hood lock arm. This plate has a hole in one end large enough to allow BOLT 5, to penetrate it. This plate has a circular hole on the other end large enough to receive the lower end of the hood lock arm. This hood lock arm plate is secured to the car by BOLT 5. FIG. 2 illustrates the lower end of the hood lock arm 1, penetrating the hood lock arm plate 2, and secured by the padlock. Also is shown a short length of arm, from the 2. This allows the hood to be raised a few inches, to get your hand in to remove the padlock, but not enough to have access to the engine.

The stabilization of the padlock, by extending the arm below the base of the padlock 3, as shown, prevents the padlock from swinging and rattling. It also prevents the padlock from going to the other side of thearm, where it can do damage to the radiator.
The ARM 1, must be curved at LOCATION 6, and in other areas wherever necessary, in order to facilitatethe penetration of PLATE 2 without jamming, as the'arm follows the path of ARC 7.
I claim:
1. In an automobile hood lock device the combination of: an automobile body, a compartment in a portion thereof; a cornpartment cover pivotally mounted on said body and disposed to pivot into open position relative to said compartment; lock means accessible externally of said compartment and disposed to lock said cover in closed position; an arm element of said lock means secured to one of said compartment cover and said body; a plate element secured to the other of said compartment cover and said body; the plate element having a hole; lock means releasably secured to said arm element near its distal end for fastening said arm element through the plate element; the arm element is curved to penetrate the plate element, the curve being in line with the path of the arc of movement of that element secured to the compartment cover to prevent jamming as the arm element goes through the hole in the plate element.
2. In combination with an automobile body having a portion thereof defining a compartment and a portion thereof defining a hinged cover for the compartment and disposed to pivot between open and closed positions relative to said compartment, a cover lock means comprising: a plate element secured to one of said portions and lying adjacent to and generally parallel to that segment of the compartment opening which is most remote from the hinge axis of the cover, at least when the cover is in closed position; an arm element secured to the so located as to be on the opposite side of the plate element from the point of arm element securement when the cover is in closed position and to be accessible externally of the compartment; and lock means releasably secured to said arm element, the lock means being of such size as to prevent withdrawal of said am element from the opening through said plate element.
Claims (2)
1. In an automobile hood lock device the combination of: an automobile body, a compartment in a portion thereof; a compartment cover pivotally mounted on said body and disposed to pivot into open position relative to said compartment; lock means accessible externally of said compartment and disposed to lock said cover in closed position; an arm element of said lock means secured to one of said compartment cover and said body; a plate element secured to the other of said compartment cover and said body; the plate element having a hole; lock means releasably secured to said arm element near its distal end for fastening said arm element through the plate element; the arm element is curved to penetrate the plate element, the curve being in line with the path of the arc of movement of that element secured to the compartment cover to prevent jamming as the arm element goes through the hole in the plate element.
2. In combination with an automobile body having a portion thereof defining a compartment and a portion thereof defIning a hinged cover for the compartment and disposed to pivot between open and closed positions relative to said compartment, a cover lock means comprising: a plate element secured to one of said portions and lying adjacent to and generally parallel to that segment of the compartment opening which is most remote from the hinge axis of the cover, at least when the cover is in closed position; an arm element secured to the other of said portions in such a position as to intercept the plate element upon closing of the cover, the plate element having a hole therethrough of such size and location as to closely receive the arm element, the plate penetrating portion of the arm element having a surface curved to conform to the arc of swing of that element secured to the cover portion so as to be received through the hole in the plate element without jamming, the arm element having lock accommodating means so located as to be on the opposite side of the plate element from the point of arm element securement when the cover is in closed position and to be accessible externally of the compartment; and lock means releasably secured to said arm element, the lock means being of such size as to prevent withdrawal of said arm element from the opening through said plate element.
