F! A. HOWSON.
VENETIAN BLIND.
Patented July 19, 1887.
INVENTOR TNESSES: M d I ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
FRANK A. HOVSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
VENETIAN BLIND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,837, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed April 5, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. How'soN, a subject ofthe Queen of Great Britaimresiding at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Venetian Blind, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the construction of blinds of that class commonly called Venetian blinds, the object ofthe invent-ion being to provide a blind which may be rolled together at either the top or the bottom of the window, or which may be slid upward or downward into a properly-formed recess, the invention consisting in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully de scribed and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a blind constructed in accordance with the terms of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sec tional view taken upon a line corresponding approximately with the line xxof Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken upon a line corresponding with the line 1 y of Fig. 1. Fig. at is a side view, on a reduced scale, of the blind partially wound upon a roller.
The slats 10, entering into the construction of the blinds illustrated in the drawings above referred to, are formed with curved upper edges, 2, and with correspondingly shaped recesses 3 in their lower edges, and near each end of the slats I form apertures that are adapted to receive metallic bands 11; or, if preferred, wires could be substituted for the bands. One wall of each lower recess, 3, is cut away or chamfered, as shown at 4, the chamfer extending inward to a point adjacent to the vertical wire or band receiving apertures, so that the strung slats forming the blind may be rolled upon a roller after the manner of an ordinaryshade, which would be impossible if the recess were not chamfered, as
Serial No. 233,729. (No model.)
described. Heretotore the lower edges of the slats have been formed with V or U shaped recesses, which would prevent the blind from being rolled, though it could be curved somewhat to enter curved ways above the window; but such a construction I do not claim.
The central portion of each slat is cut away, the lower defining wall of the cut so formed extending upward at an angle from the front or outer face of the slat, so that when two slats are strung together upon their supporting bands or wires It the lower edge 01' the outer face of each slat will be in a plane beneath the upper defining edge of the recess formed in the slat-body.
Instead ot'havingasingle recess in each slat, two or more recesses might be formed therein, and in this case the uncut portions of theslats between the recesses would be apertured to receive the stringing bands or wires. in forming these recesses they might be arranged so as to impart the effect of a paneled blind.
By forming the slats as described I provide for the rolling or sliding of the blinds into properly-arranged housings located at either the top or the bottom of the window in connection with which the blinds are arranged.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- AVenetian blind formed of the slats 10, cut away on their central upper portions, curved on their upper edges at 2, recessed on their lower edges, as at 3, to receive the curved edges 2 of the slat below, and one wall ofeach recess 3 being cut away or chamfered, as atet, to allow the blind to be rolled upon a roller alter the manner of an ordinary shade, the vertical apertures, and the flexible wires or bands 11, passing through the apertures, substantially as set forth.
FRANK A. HOlVSON.
