Description

UNITED STATES WILLIAM M. RANDALL AND GEORGE O. HOVARD, OF BELLEVILLE, OHIO.
BOTTOM FOR TYPE-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36.670, dated October 14, ISCQ.
To all whom, it may con/cern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM M. RAN- 4 DALL and GEORGE C. HOWARD, of Belleville,
in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Bottom for Type-Cases; and we do hereby declarethat the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to thelct-tcrs ot' reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in arranging a printers type-case in such a way that each box in the case may be so adjusted to the bottom that by sliding it down it will elevate the type to the top of the case, or as high as may be desired by the compositor.
To enable others to make and use ourinven` tion we will proceed to describe its construe tion and operation.
Figure l is a perspective view of our improved casc. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the bottom detached.
XVe construct our type-case A, Fig. 1, in any form known excepting the ordinary stationary bottom. Instead thereof we provide bottom B, Fig. 2, which is detached from the case A, upon which we secure blocks, each marked O O, of suitable thickness, fitted and arranged to till each box (marked N N) in the case A, but sufficiently loose to allow the case A to pass up or down over them. At the center of each end of the bottom board, B, on the upper side thereof we attach springs D,V
Fig. 2, the ends of which are sufliciently elevated to raise the case A above the blocks, (cach marked. C.)
For the purpose of securing the case A at Aany desired height, we attach hook-springs E to the outer ends of bottom board, B, at the center, which press against ratchet-bars F, secured to each end ot' case A, the teeth of which slant downward, so that a light pressure on each end of the case A at the same time will depress it to any desired point, while the spring-hooks E, catching in the ratchet-bars F, hold case Ain the position desired.
In order to elevate case A,the hook-springs E must be d rawn back from the ratchet-bars F, when the springs D will throw up case A to. their full extent.
hat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application to the case A of the bottom B, arranged with blocks O O, so as to ll each box N N in the case A, as described, with the springs D and springsE and ratchetbars F, to operate as set forth, wherebyV the case may be elevated or depressed asthe convenience of the operator may require, all to be used in combination, for the purposes above named.
Belleville, July 7, 1862.
WILLIAM M. RANDALL. GEORGE O. HOWARD.
