UNiTnio STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
LAFAYETTE HUNTOON, OF NATIGK, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO ELVIN C. HUNTOON, OF SAME PLACE.
BOILER FOR HEATING APPARATUS.-
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 366,629l dated July` 12, 1887.
i Application filed May 20, 1887. Serial No. 238,947. (No model.)
T all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LAFAYETTE HUN'rooN,'
of Natick,in the eountyof Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Boilers for I-Iot- Vater Heating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to economize vfuel in hot-Water heating apparatus; and Io to this end it consists, mai nly,in a boiler formed to surround the tire-box of the furnace, and also to extend over the saine in the forni of a dome.
The invention also consists in the combinar 5 tion, with aboiler of the form above indicated, ofa casingorjaeketsurrouinling and extending over the top of the same, and forming a chau1- ber for the smoke and products of combustion, all of which I will now proceed to-describe and 2o claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved boiler. Fig. 2 represents a vert-ical section of the saine. Fig. 3 represents a section on line y y, Fig. 2. The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the igures.
In t-he drawings, a represents the firebox, b the grate, and c the water jacket. Said 3o jacket is formed to surround the fire-box, as shown in Fig. 3, and also to extend across the top of said box, as shown in Fig. 2, the jacket having a dome, 2, conducting the water over the iire-boX.
d represents the casing surrounding the water-jacket, and arranged so that a space, s, exists entirely surrounding the water-jacket and extending over the top or dome thereof. In said easing, nearits upper portion, is a door, 4o e, with which coincides an opening, f, extending through the waterjackct, for the introduction of fuel into the iirc-box and for the escape of smoke and products of combustion into the space or smoke-chamber s; or, if preferred, a separate opening, f', may be provided from the tire-box to the smoke-chamber through the dome, which opening may have a valve or damper, g, arranged to be opened when the fuel-door e is opened, to prevent the escape of 5o smoke and gases into the apartment. Said damper may be closed at other times to canse the products of combustion to pass to the smokechamber through the openingf, and thus act on a greater extent of the external surface of the water-jacket and its dome than if they passed 5 5 out through the top opcning,f', the side opening, j', being at the opposite side of the jacket from the ilue t', through which the products of combustion leave the casing d, so that the products of combustion emerging from the side 6o opening,f, have to pass entirely around the jacket c. The luei is located at the lower portion of the casing, as shown in Fig. 2.
I prefer to provide a draft-opening atj in the rear wall of the ash-pit k, or in the side of the casin g d vopposite to that in which the door e is formed, so that the air will pass across the fire-box before escaping at the openingf, as indicated by the arrows in Fio'. 2. The `fuel is thus more fully exposed to the draft than it 7o would be if the air entered at the front side of the ash-pit.
lt will be seen that by carrying the waterjacket over the iire-box I obtain a large extent of surface exposed to the heat 'from the fire, 75 and thus economize fuel.
m m represent the pipes th rough which water enters the lower portion of the waterjacket, and a n represent the pipes through which the heated water passes from the jacket to the ra 8o diating-coils.
1. In a water-heating apparatus, the coinbination of the fire-box, the water-jacket extending down to the grate and over the top of 8 5 the lire-box, as shown, and provided with a fuel-receiving opening, f, and the casing surrounding and extending over said jacket, and having a door, e, coinciding with thev opening j", as set forth.
The combination ofthe firebox, the Waterjacketsurrounding said box and having a dome covering the same, and an opening, j", in one side below said dome, the casing having the door c coinciding with the opening f, and the 95 escape-flue fi at the opposite side from the door c, as set forth.
3. The combination ofthe fire-box, the domed water-jacket having the valved openingf in its dome, and the side opening, f, and the cas- Ioo ing (Z, having the door e, ooinoidingwith the In testimony whereof I/have signed my side opening, f, and the escape-flue at the opname to this specification, in the presence of posite side from the door e, as set forth. two subscribingWit11esses,this14th day ofMay,
