M ASHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.366,573, dated July 12,1887.
Application filed January 27, i897. Serial No. 225,604. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN P. DonLFnL, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mashing Apparatus,ofw'hich thefollowing is aspeciication.
This invention relates to improvements in mashing apparat-us, as set forth in the folloW- ing specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation, partly in section, of a mashing apparatus. Fig. 2 is a seetion in the plane m x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 shows a modiiied form of stil-rer.

The letter A indicates a mash-tub.
B is a bearing foramainshafaC. The main shaft C can be revolved by abevel gear-wheel, D, keyed or firmly connected to the shaft C. A bevel gear-wheel, E, connected to a shaft, F, and pulley G, is shown as being adapted to impart motion to the bevel gearwvheel D. The revolution of the shaft C is communicated to arms H, keyed or firmly connected to the shaft C.
To the arms H are secured hangers l. As indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l, the number ofhangers I can be increased, if it is desired to give additional strength to the device. The hangers I support stirrershafts J, which stirrershafts are free to revolve about their own axes. As seen in Fig. 1, part of the stirrershafts J may also be supported by the main shaft C. The revolution of the stirrer-shafts J is communicated to stirrers K, firmly secu red to the stirrer-shafts. The stirrers K may be made of any suitable shape-such, for example, as shown in Fig. 1, or as shown, for example, in Fig. 3. For heavy kind of work, the stir rer shown in Fig. 3 will be preferable.
The stirrer-shaftsJ are provided with cranks L, connected by links M P and pitmen N to gear-wheels Q. Suitable guides, O, in the arms H are provided for the pitmen N.
The gear-wheels Q receive motion from a bevel gear-wheel, S, by means of a gear-ring, T, secured to the bevel-wheel S and engaging the gear-wheels Q. The bevel-wheel S is free to turn independently of the main shaft C.
Motion is communicated to the bevel-wheel S by suitable means, such as a bevel gear-wheel, U, connected to a shaft` V, and pulley V.
The driving-shafts F V can be connected, if desired, by suitable gears, X Y, feathered on the shafts FV, so that said gears turn with the shafts F V, but said gears are free to move longitudinally along the shafts. XVheu out of gear with one another, the shafts F V can be actuated independently of one another. As the bevel gear-wheel S is/monnted loosely on the main shaft C, the stirrer-arms J, with the stirrers K, can bo actuated while the main shaft C and the hangers H remain stationary.
The axles c of the gears Q, are shown as being supported by a bearing or collar, d, mounted on the main shaft C. One end of the main shaft C is shown as being supported or steadied by a bearing, Z. The bearing Z, as also the hangers or arms a, supporting the drivingshafts F V, can be secured in any suitable Way-as, for example, to a support, b-which may be the upper part of a room or the roof of a building.
rIhe tub A may be provided with a roof, y. By having suitable openings, c, in the roof g. the main shaft C and the driving mechanism for the stirrer shafts J can gain access to the interior of the tub A.
1t will be noticed that by the construction shown in the drawings all thel gears ortoothed Wheels and the driving-shafts F V are placed outside of the tub A. Said gears are thus not liable to become clogged or choked by the contents of the tub, and said gears are free to work easily, and the interior of the tub is easily cleaned. By having the stirrers K adapted to operate independently of the rotation of the main shaft C different velocities can be imparted to the stirrers and to the main shaft, which is at times an advantage to the operator. By having the gears X Y of different dialneters different velocities will be imparted to the shafts F V when said shafts are connected by the gears X Y, and the different velocities of the drivingshafts F V can be made to impart different velocities to the main shaft C and to the stirrers K.
The gears X Y can be readily moved in a longitudinal direction along the shafts F V by IOO the hand of the attendant. As the gears XY are feathered on the shaftsFY, the attendant, by pressing laterally on the gears X Y, or by giving the gears XY lateral blows with a suitableinstrument-suchasahammer-Willmove the gears XY into or out'ofengagement with one another, as may be desired.
By having all the gears located outside of the tub A the gears are not liable to become choked by the contents of the tub. an advantage to have separate actuating devices for the shaft 'C and for the stirrers K, as thereby the respective motions of the shaftand stirrers can be regulated as desired. For eX- ample, the stirrers K, with their axis J, ma
be caused to revolve very vrapidly while the shaft C is caused to turn with Vcomparative slowness. The result is that the contents of the tub are thoroughly agitated as the stirrers K travel about the interior of the tub.
Heretofore a mashing-tun has been used wherein vertical stirrers are used in combination With centrifugal horizontal stirrers intermediate of the vertical stirrers. A churn has also been known in which a dasher or stirrer revolving in a vertical plane has been driven by pitmen from a crank-shaft, the cranks being so arranged that they pass the dead-points successively. I make no claim to any such devices.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l l. The combination, with -a tub, A, main shaft C, and stirrers K, connected to the main shaft, of driving-shafts F V, adapted to oper` ate independent-ly of one another, one of said driving-shafts being connected to the main shaft C, and the other driving-shaft being conneeted to the stirrers K, substantially as set forth.

The combination, with a tub, A, rotary main shaft C, arms H, and stirrers K,mounted on shafts which are journaled in the main shaft and in supports carried by said shaft, of driving-gears S U, gear-ring T, gear-Wheels Q, and connecting-rods or pitmen N, connecting the gear-Wheels Q, and stirrers K, said pitmen N having guides O, supported by the main shaft C, substantially as set forth. v
4. The combination, with a tub, A, main shaft C, and stirrers K, mounted on shafts which are journaled in the main shaft and in supports carried by said shaft, of drivingshafts F V, having ruiter-gears meshing with gears on the main shaft C and connected by pitmen to the stirrer-shaft, and longitudinallymovable gears X Y, for connecting said drivT ing-shafts, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with a tub, A, mainV shaft C, and stirrers K, mounted on shafts which are journaled in; the main shaft and in supports carried by said shaft, of drivingshafts F Y, having gears meshing with gears on the main shaft C and connected Witlrthe stirrer-shafts by pitmen, said driving-shafts F Y being located outside of the tub, substantially as set forth.
