SLEEPING-CAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,382, dated July 12, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, E. WALDo CUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State ot'Massaehusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad Sleeping-Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is a section of a railroad sleeping-car arranged so that the two berths therein shall be distinct from each other, each having its own curtains, and each capable of being entered or left without disturbing the occupant of the other. I accomplish this object by arranging the upper berth substantially as at present, except that it is provided with short curtains reaching down only to the base of the upper berth; and there are provided for the lower berth curtains attached to the base of the upper berth, so as to be entirely separate from the curtains belonging to the upper berth. The curtains for the lower berth are made in two parts, as is now ordinarily done, but each curtain is divided from the bottom up to about the top of the arms of the seats, so as to permit the inner part to pass between the seat-frame composing the arm and the frame on which the seat-cushions rest.

In the drawing I have shown a view of a section of a sleeping-car embodying my invention.

A is the upper berth, and B is the lower berth.

If it is desired, the parts (Z (1, instead of passing out and hanging as above described, may be laid on the seat and under the mattress.

By the use of my invention the aisle of the car is left entirely unobstructed, the arms of the seat are outside of the lower berth, and may be used to assist the occupant of the up per berth in getting into and out of his berth, and the user of each berth is separated from the other and entirely undisturbed so far as the other is concerned.

\Vhen but one berth is in use, the upper and lower curtains may be buttoned or otherwise attached to each other, and an advantage will still result in the use of my invention in that the aisles will be kept free from obstruction,

conductors and others as guides and supports in passing along the aisle.

WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A curtain for a sleeping-car divided at its lower extremity so as to permit one portion or flap to pass between the car-scat frame and the arm of the seat, substantially as above described.
