Referring now more particularly to the embodiment represented in FIGS. 1 to 5 of the drawings herein, a pool game table 10 is characterized by having in the structure thereof a top component 11 which comprises bed and perimetrical rail means 13 wherein bed 14 and the perimetrical rail 15 as well as a plurality of tubular pool ball lead lines 16 all are members of a casting made for example of concrete as cast material 29, or of any other suitable material as the cast material, having the tubular lead lines embedded therein and integrally bonded thereto by comolding. These lead lines afford passageways interiorly of the casting. The casting has a recess 18 within the surround of the perimetrical rail in a normally up side 17, there being a substantially plane face 19 of the bed at the bottom of the recess. Geometrically, the area of the substantially plane face 19 of the bed is about the same in all four quadrants leading from the normally vertical axis of the recess 18 up to the perimetrical rail 15.
Top component 11 includes cushion members 80 connected with rail 15 of the casting and also is lined with billiard cloth 81 or other suitable lining connected with the casting. There are notches 27 in the table top component 11 entering between longitudinal ends of the cushion members 80, which notches furthermore in the present embodiment are into the rail 15 between longitudinal ends of sectors 15a of the rail. An outside border 30 of the casting extends facially backwardly and outwardly from the normally up side 17 of the casting, and the casting marginally at the normally up side in the regions between the notches 27 has a substantially uniform width from the innermost faces of sectors 15a of the perimetrical rail 15 to this outside border. It therefore follows that the lateral ends of the rail sectors 15a toward recess 18 longitudinally extend between the notches 27 substantially concentrically with the outside border 30. By having the outside border 30 lead facially backwardly and outwardly from the crest of the perimetrical rail 15, as preferred, there are advantages among which are those of accordingly reducing bulk of the casting while preserving strength laterally across the perimetrical rail and facilitating reach by players of the game toward the innermost region of the recess 18 from the outside border.
Bed 14 forms a truncated substantially central portion 32 of the casting on the normally down side 31 directly behind a geometrically central area of the substantially plane face 19 of the bed. The truncated central portion 32 as facially exposed on side 31 is generally plane having the normally vertical axis of the recess 18 substantially perpendicular thereto and extends generally parallel with the substantially plane face 19 of the bed 14. From this truncated central portion 32 the bed face diverges outwardly and forwardly toward the outside border 30 and joins with the rear facial end of that border. As exemplified, the normally down side 31 is generally conical substantially coaxial with the normally vertical axis of the recess 18 in the region between the truncated central portion 32 and a substantially circular junction with the border 30 which thence facially itself, as exemplified, is generally conical substantially coaxially with the normally vertical axis of the recess 18 to a substantially circular juncture with the normally up side 17 of the casting.
Both an elbow 20 and a tubular portion 22 of each lead line 16 are embedded in the cast material 29 in a comolded and thus integrally bonded relation to the cast material and thus contribute as members of the casting. Each lead line progresses longitudinally away from the substantially plane face 19 of the bed 14 so that when the latter face is about level a pool ball entering the passageway any one of the lead lines 16 at pool ball inlet 21 thereof will be conveyed through the particular lead line to a pool ball outlet 23 of the lead line passageway by gravity. In further detail, the lead lines 16 have their passageway outlets 23 grouped within the truncated central portion 32 directly behind the geometrically central area of the substantially plane face 19 of the casting for the lead lines to deliver pool balls by gravity to these outlets.
Lead lines 16 moreover communicate for pool balls moving to the outlets 23 to have egress from the casting by gravity through a thimble 45 which is embedded in cast material of the truncated central portion 32 in a comolded and thus integrally bonded relation to that material. A normally downwardly open chamber 46 of the thimble is in communication with the pool ball outlets 23 and with the exterior of the casting on the normally down side 31 of the casting through the substantially central area of this side of the casting. Accordingly, chamber 46 is closed against the cast material 29 by a normally inverted bottom 47 of the thimble and by a side wall 48 of the thimble. The tubular portions 22 of the lead lines 16 are joined with this thimble side wall at the pool ball outlets 23 for these outlets to deliver pool balls into the chamber 46. From the elbows 20, the tubular portions 22 progress increasingly farther away from the substantially plane face 19 of the bed 14 and longitudinally toward the thimble 45 in a substantially radial relation to the thimble.
The pool ball inlets 21 are entrant in the notches 27 adjacent to the perimetrical rail 15, and are six in number with their centers spaced substantially equidistantly apart from each other, as preferred, although this number or spacing, or both, may be otherwise if desired. Also, as preferred, the centers of the pool ball inlets 21 are approximately on a circle having center on the normally vertical axis of the recess 18 while the lateral innermost ends of the cushion members in the recess extend substantially on arcs of a circle longitudinally between the notches 27 with the latter circle being centered on the same axis.
The elbows 20 at the pool ball inlets 21 provide cladding 25 externally facially of the casting within the notches 27 in the perimetrical rail 15. Cladding 25 leads up to the crest of the rail 15 between the rail sectors 15a. Moreover, in the present embodiment, other external faces of the casting, including the face of border 30, the face of the perimetrical rail 15 outside the notches 27, and the substantially plane face 19 of the bed 14, also occur on cladding. In the latter regard, the normally up side 17 and border 30 of the casting are characterized by having the casting include a cupped cladding shell 40 which interiorly facially is in a comolded and thus integrally bonded relation to the cast material 29 at the normally up side 17 and at border 30. Shell 40, however, is connected with outer ends of the elbows 20 around the pool ball inlets 21 and thus with the cladding 25 afforded by these elbows. More particularly, a normally inverted bottom 41 of the cupped shell 40 occurs externally facially in the casting and thereby presents the substantially plane face 19 of the casting at the bottom of the recess 18 and that of the perimetrical rail 15 outside th notches 27, while a flange 42 of the shell occurs externally facially in the casting at border 30. Each elbow 20 is a product of fiber glass and resin and is connected at inner end with the related tubular portion 22, the latter being made of ebonite, while the cup-shaped shell 40 and thimble 45 are each products of fiber glass and resin, although any other suitable material or materials may of course be substituted for any of those just named with reference to any or all of the several members.
In producing the casting hereinbefore described it is advantageous to provide a unit which includes the cupped shell 40, the thimble 45 and the lead lines 16 interconnected with the cupped shell and the thimble as these lead lines are to be in the casting, and to provide a mold which is female at the bottom and side respectively to the bottom 41 and flange 42 respectively of the cupped shell as they are to occur male in the casting, and under these conditions place the aforementioned unit in the mold with the cupped shell 40 resting male at bottom 41 on the female bottom of the mold and with the flange 42 resting male against the female side of the mold, and then filling the mold with casting material 29 behind the cupped shell and in over the lead lines 16 up to and embedding the thimble 45. In working with such materials 29 as concrete it is usually sufficient then to finish off the normally bottom face 31 of the casting such as with a screed or a trowel in an open mold, thereafter allowing the casting to set and then stripping the casting of the mold.
In table top component 11 the cushion members 80 and billiard cloth 8] are bonded at interior face by means of an appropriate adhesive to the cupped shell 40 thus to line the recess 18. In other embodiments still in accordance with the present invention the pool ball playing surface at the bottom of the recess may for example directly be that of cladding, or of paint on cladding, in each instance in the absence of billiard cloth, or be that of the cast material which is comolded with the tubular lead lines, or be of billiard cloth or of paint in each instance directly on the cast material in the absence of intermediate cladding, in the several instances having the cushion members appropriately connected with the casting. A number of advantages, however, are found as an incident to including the cupped cladding shell 40, among which are that it preestablishes surface of the casting and that it associates well with the tubular lead lines with or without a thimble in the mold and in the resulting cast product.
Table is a pool game pedestal table wherein support and pool ball receiver means 83 are hollow communicating with the pool ball outlets 23 and with the exterior of the table for the support and pool ball receiver means to receive pool balls by gravity from these pool ball outlets, issue the pool balls received to the exterior of the table, and contain the pool balls thus issued. A pedestal 84 in the support and pool ball receiver structure includes a pillar 85, such as of concrete, and which as shown is tubular having a longitudinal hollow or passage 86 therein and a side aperture in the form of a notch 87 laterally communicating with the passage 86 from a normally upper end 88 of the pillar. Pedestal 84 further comprises a base 89 extending beneath the pillar 85 for supporting the pillar such as by resting upon the floor of a room or on earth in an outdoor location. While table 10 may be considered as being either for indoor or outdoor use, FIG. 1 represents installation for outdoor recreation, with the lower portion of the pillar 85 extending underground to base 89, the latter being placed to serve as a footing, such as of concrete, against earth preferably below frostline.
A pool ball receptacle embodying a tray 90 in the pool ball support and receiver structure is accommodated open upright by insertion into the passage 86 and notch 87 from the normally upper end 88 of the pillar and thence by lowering into the seated position shown against the pillar at the bottom of .notch 87. In the latter position the tray 90, still open upward,
projects into the passage 86 and through the notch 87 and thence radially from the pillar 85 outside the pillar, for receiving pool balls delivered by gravity through passage 86 and delivering the pool balls received to the exterior of the pillar through notch 87. Tray 90 may be made of fiber glass and resin or of any other suitable material or materials as occasion may demand.
Seating upon the normally upper end 88 of the pillar 85 is a cap 91 of the pedestal 84; this cap, being made of concrete or of any other suitable material, has a central opening 92 therein communicating with passage 86 and is aligned with the tray 90 for pool balls to enter the passage by gravity from the cap and thence fall into the tray inside the pillar. The alignment of cap opening 92 with the pillar 85 for the latter purpose is assured and preserved by a plug-like longitudinal extension 91a of the cap which substantially interfits with the pillar inside the passage 86 and substantially closes off the notch 87 for a distance down the pillar toward the tray 90. Besides being seated on the pillar at the bottom of notch 87, tray 90 is inclined from inner end in passage 86 toward the outer end outside the pillar 85 for delivering pool balls through this notch. The inner end of tray 90 is connected with hanger means 94 and is engaged with the normally upper end 88 of the pillar by the hanger means for supporting the tray inclined as aforementioned and maintaining the inner end of the tray substantially against the innermost face of extension 910 of the cap 93 in passage 86. Tray 90 is configurated, having a taper, for engaging the pillar 85 adjacent to notch 87 against endwise movement of the tray outwardly through the notch.
Table 10 also is characterized by leveling means 95 for leveling the table top structure 11. In the leveling means a plu rality of relatively movable leveling screws 95a are mounted in the cap 91 for adjustably leveling the table top structure and extend upwardly into contact with the normally down side 31 of the casing at the face of the truncated central portion 32 of the casting for transmitting load of the table top structure to the pedestal 84. From the truncated central portion 32 a tubular extension 45a of the thimble 45 projects male into opening 92 of the cap 91 for aligning the table top structure 11 with pedestal 84 and transmitting pool balls from the pool ball outlets 23 to the opening 92, and to maintain telescopic interfit with the cap such as when the leveling screws 95a are being adjusted for leveling the substantially plane face 19 of the bed 14.
In accordance with the embodiment represented in FIG. 6, a pool game table 10' is provided wherein the top structure 11" is substantially rectangular in plan, having a bed 14', a perimetrical rail 15' and tubular lead lines 16' occur along with thimble 45', as well as with a pedestal 84 and a pool ball receptacle all as members of the same casting in a comolded and thus integrally bonded relation to cast material 29. The feature of leveling the table top structure relative to the pedestal accordingly has been omitted. An elongated extension 45a' of the thimble leads all the way to a shell 90a of the receptacle, being connected with the latter shell, and the extension 450 and shell 90a are embedded in the cast material 29' in a comolded and integrally bonded relation to this material. Receptacle 90' is upwardly open accessibly from the exterior of the casting for receiving pool balls from the pool ball inlets 21' leading from the recess 18 thence to the pool ball outlets 23 and the remainder of the pool hall gravity conveying system terminating at the receptacle 90'.
As the invention lends itself to many possible embodiments and as many possible changes may be made in the embodiments hereinbefore set forth, it will be distinctly understood that all matter described herein is to be interpreted as illustrative and not as a limitation.
