- DOORSTOPANDHOLDER [72] Inventors: Leo Coopersmith, lvoryton; Frank H.
- ABSTRACT This disclosure relates to a door stop and holder of the type wherein a roller member carried on one of a door and stationary member is adapted to be received within a detent slot on the other of the door and stationary member.
- the detent slot is defined in an arcuate path and the longitudinal periphery of the roller is formed with an arcuate shape to permit relative placement of the members for varying reveals of the door.
- DOOR STOP AND HOLDER This invention relates to hardware, and more particularly relates to door stops and holders.
- the present invention provides a new and improved door holder and stop of simplified and economical construction which may be mounted to a door and wall having varying degrees of reveal therebetween and which permits a wide latitude in the relative mounting as between the door mounted portion and the wall or floor mounted portion.
- Door stops and holders of the general type to which this invention pertains generally comprise a holder member and a keeper member mounted in cooperating relation on a door and an adjacent wall or floor.
- the holder member may be provided with a spring-biased roller or ball which is adapted to be received in a groove in a keeper member.
- the cooperating action is such that as the keeper strikes the spring-loaded roller it moves it upwardly and the loading on the roller then forces it downwardly into the groove defined in the keeper to provide a latch or holding action therebetween.
- the slot or groove in the keeper is defined along an arcuate path or on a radius, and the roller is formed with a mating contour along its length.
- An object of this invention is to provide a new and improved door stop and holder assembly.
- Another object of this invention is to provide a new and improved door stop assembly which provides a greater latitude in relative placement of the keeper and holder members with varying reveal of the door.
- FIG. 1 is a view of a door and wall (partly cutaway) seen from above;
- FIG. 2 is a view seen in the plane of lines 2-2 of FIG. 1;
- FIG. 3 is a plan view of a keeper member of the assembly of FIG. 2;
- FIG. 4 is a view seen in the plane of lines 4-4 of FIG. 2;
- FIG. 5 is a view of the holder assembly of FIG. 2 seen from the rear thereof;
- FIG. 6 is a view of the wall mounting plate and bumper in the assembly of FIG. 2;
- FIG. 7 is a view seen in the plane of lines 7-7 of FIG. 5;
- FIG. 8 is a floor-mounted keeper which may be utilized in the invention.
- an assembly embodying the invention comprises a keeper or striking 'member 11 and a holder member 12.
- holder member 12 is mounted to the back of a door 13 which is hinged at 14 to a wall 15 defining a door opening.
- Door 13 together with a sidewall 16 defines a reveal R.
- the wall-mounted striking member or keeper 11 is mounted to wall 16 as by means of screws 17 extending through a back plate portion 18 that has an outwardly extending portion 19 terminating in an arcuate striking surface 20.
- keeper 11 adjacent the striking surface thereof is an arcuate slot 21 adapted to receive a detent roller as hereinafter described.
- a mounting plate 23 having outstanding ears 24 which are tapered outwardly from top tobottom as more clearly shown in FIG. 6. Carried on plate 23 adjacent the lower portion thereof is a resilient bumper 25 which may be rubber or other suitable resilient and sound-deadening material.
- the holder member 12 comprises a housing member 27 having a back wall 28 with the inner side edges 29 thereof tapered outwardly from top to bottom complementary to the taper on ears 24 of back plate 23. As more clearly shown in FIG. 4, housing member 27 is further defined with surfaces 30 adapted to mate with the rear surfaces of ears 24 on back plate 23.
- housing 27 is positively and firmly attached to the door 13 by sliding the rear surface thereof over ears 24 to firmly seat housing 27 and then setting set screw 31 against the back surface of one of cars 24.
- a pin or shaft 32 is set in housing 27 as by being received in slots 33 defined in opposite interior side walls of housing 27 and a portion 34 of the housing is then peened under pin 32 to securely mount it to housing 27.
- Pivotally mounted to pin 32 is a carrier member 36 which is acted upon by a spring 37 at the other end thereof.
- a shaft or pin 38 carried between spaced apart, depending walls 39 and 40 of carrier 36.
- Rotatable on pin 38 is a barrel shaped roller 41 adapted to be received in slot 21 as shown in broken line in FIG. 3.
- An adjusting screw 42 extends through an opening 43 in the top wall of housing 27 and the head thereof rests on a relieved shoulder.
- the shank of screw 42 receives a nut 44 thereon having. a slot 45 defined in the periphery thereof to receive an end 46 of spring 37.
- the upper surface of nut 44 is spaced from boss 48 on housing 27 by a washer 49.
- the opposite end of spring 37 is formed with a portion 50 (FIG. 4) which abuts upstanding tab 51 on carrier member 36.
- This construction of the ends of spring 37 prevents rotation thereof upon adjustment of screw 42 and further prevents rotation of nut 44 when screw 42 is adjusted.
- Nut 44 will then move linearly on screw 42 to adjust the tension in spring 37.
- Washer 49 prevents the tensioned spring from forcing screw 42 upwardly.
- the washer 49 which is received in an annular slot defined in screw 42 acts against the under surface of boss 48 to prevent any outward movement of screw 42.
- the walls 39 and 40 of carrier member 36 may be formed with edges 53 which will abut the inside front surface of housing 27 and limit rotational movement of carrier member 36 under the bias of spring 37.
- housing 27 In operation, when the door 13 is opened a sufficient distance, housing 27 will be moved back over the end surface 20 of keeper or striker 19. Depending upon the force at which the door is opened the end surface 20 may abut pad 25 and cushion the impact. As the door 13 rebounds, roller 41 under the biasing of spring 37 acting on carrier 36 will enter slot 21 and hold the door in a latch or door holding position.
- the disengaging force applied to roller 41 by surface S which partially defines slot 21 will be essentially parallel to a line or plane passing the axis of pin 32 and the axis of roller 41 and only a small component of the force exerted on roller 41 by surface S will be effective to rotate carrier 36 in a counterclockwise direction as viewed in FIG. 2.
- the total force required for engagement and disengagement will be a factor of the geometry of the dimensions of the carrier and the axis of pin 32 and roller 41 taken together with the constant of spring 37 and the adjustment of screw 42. Therefore, with this arrangement the mechanism may be made to latch with a minimum of force while a much greater force is required for unlatching.
- FIG. 8 exemplifies an alternate striker member 54 adapted to be floor mounted.
- a base portion 55 has screw or bolt mounting holes 56 defined therein and an upstanding portion 57 with an arcuate slot 58 defined in the upper surface 59 thereof adapted to receive roller 41 therein.
- the arcuate slots 21 and 58 in the striking members, together with the roller 41 with its barrel shape, permit the use of this assembly on doors having varying degrees of reveal. This arrangement makes the relative placement of the striking member and the holding member less critical. Engagement and latching of the two members may be effected even though as much as half of the length of the roller may extend beyond the slots 21 or 58.
- first and second cooperating members adapted to be mounted to the door and the stationary member, said first member adapted to be mounted to one of said door and stationary member and comprising a striking member having a stopping portion, and a slot defined in an upper surface thereof behind said stopping portion, said second member adapted to be mounted to the other of said door and stationary member and comprising a housing member positioned above the upper surface of said striking member, a roller member carried by said housing and resiliently biased downwardly therefrom, said roller member adapted to be forced upwardly by said striking member when said housing member moves over said striking member and then enters said slot to latch said first and second members, said slot being defined in said striking member on an arcuate path, said roller member having its longitudinal peripheral surface formed with a curved contour.
