MACHINE 50R MANUFACTURING NUTS AND WASHERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,328, dated June 21, 1887.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL BRIGHTMORE, a citizen "of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for the Manufacture of Nuts and Washers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of machines which are intended for the production of punched blanks for nuts or washers from a bar of the proper width and thickness, the object of my invention being to construct a machine of this class having high productive capacity and requiring but little attention and no special skill in its management.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a nut or washer machine constructed in accordance with 'my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section on the line 1 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a sectional plan on the line 3 4, Fig. 1.

The slide D carries punches x and g, which act in conjunction with dies :0 y in the punchingbed F, the punch 00 and die so being such as to form the desired openingin the nut or washer blank, and the punch y and die 3 being so formed as to severthe blank from the end of the strip or bar. v
Resting upon atable, d, in frontof the punching-bed F is a feed-trough, G, having alon- ,gitudinal channel, f, for the reception of the bar which is to be cut up into blanks, and from the opposite sides of this trough project arms 9, the outer ends of which are pivoted to the front ends of levers J, secured to rock-shafts J, which are adapted to bearings in brackets h on the side frames, A. At the rear of the machine is a similar supporting-table, d, and feed-trough G, the arms g of the latter being connected to the rear ends of the levers J; hence when said levers are vibrated a transverse/movement will be imparted to the feedtroughs, one moving in one direction across the machine and the other in the reverse direction. As the arms 9 are rigidly connected to the troughs, these movements will be in arcs of circles corresponding to those of the ends of the lever-arms, so that there will be -no risk of the contact of the projecting inner ends of the bars carried by the troughs. (See dotted lines, Fig. 4:.)
To steady the movement of the feed-troughs, pinst' on the underside of the same are adapted to segmental guideslots t" in the tables (Z, the centers of these slots being of the same radius as the arcs traversed by the centers of the pins which connect the arms 9 to the levers J. In some cases the inner ends of the armsg may be pivoted to the feed-troughs, and the slots i and pins t relied upon to guide said troughs. Each trough G has guide-rolls m the peripheries of which project into the groove f of the trough and bear upon the opposite edges of the strip or bar contained therein, three of these guide-rolls being carried by boxes acted upon by springs m. The A A are the opposite side frames or standother roll, however, constitutes a feed-roll, the upper projecting portion of its spindle being carried by an arm, n, and provided with a ratchet-wheel, a, with which engages a pawl hung to an arm, 19, the latter being free to swing on the spindle and being connected by a rod, 1), to a stud on one of the side frames,
so that as the feed-trough is moved transversely the arm p, owing to the retention of its outer end by the rod 1), will be caused to swing, and an intermittent forward motion will be imparted to the feed-roll, back movement being prevented by a suitable retainingpawl. The arm it can be adjusted to different positions,andretained after adjustment by the tightening of its pivot-bolt, so as to adapt the feed-roll to bars of different widths.
The shaft B is driven from a shaft, K, adapted to bearings on the side frames at the rear of the machine, a spur-wheel, k, on the shaft B meshing into a pinion, 70, on the shaft K, and the latter having a pulley, K, which receives a belt from a pulley on any adjacent countershaft. On the shaft B is also a spur-pinion, s, which meshes into a spur-wheel, s, on a shaft, 8, adapted to abearingin a standard, M, on top of one of the side frames,A, and this shaft s has a disk, N, with cam-slot t, with which engages a pin or stud, t, at the upper end of a slide, P, adapted to a suitable guide on the side frame, A. The lower end of this slide 1? is connected by a link, a, to a short arm, R, on a rock-shaft, Q, adapted to hearings in studs on the frame A, a long arm, R, on this shaft carrying a block, a, to which is hung the forked end of arod, T, the opposite end of which is also forked and hung to a block, 1;, carried by an arm, V, which is secured to the rock-shaft J of one of the levers J. The vibrating movement of the arm It is thus transmitted to the lever J, so as to cause the transverse movement of the feedtroughs G, and the extent of this movement may be regulated as desired by adjusting the block '0 on the arm It, or by the adjnstmentof the block 1: on the arm V, the blocks being for this purpose confined between nuts 20, adapted to threaded portions of the arms. The punches a: and y opcrate simultaneously, one upon the bar of one feedtrough and the other upon the bar of the other feed-trough, and when the punches are raised the troughs are shifted, the perforated bar being carried across to the cutting-off punch, and the bar from which the blank has been out being carried over to the punch 60, the feeding forward of the bar taking place during this latter movement. The punch 3 is preferably concave or dished upon its under face, so as to impart the desired bevel or chamfer to the top of the nut-blank simulta neously with the severing of the latter from the bar. Projectingfingers q serve to pre vent the lifting of the inner end of the bar by either punch as it rises.
As the machine both punches and cuts off a blank at each operation of the punch-slide, the productive capacity of the machine is high, and as no attention is required other than the supplying of the bars to the feed troughs skilled labor is not necessary to run the machine,'and one attendant can take charge of a number of machines, thus reducing to a low figure the expense of running.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the perforating and cutting punches and dies arranged side by side, actuating mechanism for said punches, a trough having mechanism for feeding the bar to be cut into nuts, and means for moving said trough transversely, so as to carry the bar from the perforating to the cutting-off punch, all substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the perforating and cutting-off punches and dies, and actuating mechanism for said punches, with opposite fecd-troughs, each free to move transversely to carry its bar from one punch to the other, and operating devices whereby one trough is moved in one direction simultaneously with the movement of the other trough in the opposite direction, all substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the perforating and cutting-off punches and dies, and actuating mechanism for said punches,with a feed-trough free to move transverselyto carryits bar from one punch to the other, feed mechanism carried by said trough, and devices, substantially as described, whereby said feed mechanism is operated during one movement of the trough and is inactive during the reverse movement, all substantially as specified.
4:. The combination of the perforating and cutting-off punches and dies, and actuating mechanism for said punches, with opposite feedtroughs, each movable transversely to carry its bar from one punch to the other,and with mechanism for moving said troughs in arcs of circles, one trough traversing in one direction and the other in the Opposite direc tion, whereby the projecting ends of the bars clear each other in passing, all substantially as specified.
5. The combination of a feedtrough, a vibrated operating-lever, an arm connecting the trough thereto, a table having a segmental guide-slot, and a pin projecting from the guide into said slot, all substantially as specified.
6. The combination of the feed-trough, the pivoted vibrating levers, and arms forming a rigid connection between the trough and said levers, whereby the trough travels in the are of a circle corresponding to that traversed by the ends of the lovers, all substantially as specified.
7. The combination ofopposite feed-troughs, opposite vibrated levers each having two arms, and rigid arms connecting each trough to one arm of each lever, all substantiallyasspeoified.
S. The combination of oppositefeed-troughs, opposite two-armed levers and means for vibrating the same, arms connecting each trough to one arm of each lever, and supporting-tables, one for each trough, each table having a segmental guideslot for the reception of a pin on the trough, all substantially as specified.
9. The combination of a feed-trough and its operating-lever, the shaft of the latter having an arm, a power-transmitting arm, R, and a double-forked connecting rod, whereby the transmitting-lever is coupled to the rock-shaft arm, all substantially as specified.
10. The combination ofafeed-trough and its operating-lever, the shaft of the latter having an arm,a poWer-transmitting arm, R',ad0ubleforked connecting-rod, and connecting-blocks for the latter, one or both of said blocks being adjustable on the carrying-arm to vary the length of stroke, all substantially as specified.
11. The combination of the fccd'trough with guide-rolls having springbearings and a feedroll the bearing of which is inelastic but adjustable, all substantially as specified.
