UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. LEONIDAS C. LOWDEN, LAWRENCE, INDIANA.
WIRE-.FENCE MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,312, dated June 21, 1887.
' Application filed March 14, 1857. Serial No. 230,748. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LEoNIDAs C. LowDEN, of Lawrence, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usethe same. ening-bar and the bolt connected therewith.
pickets or slats of the fence.
ful Improvements in Wire -vFence Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which. like letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to the construction of wire-fence machines and tension devices used in connection therewith, and is an improvement upon the invention shown in Letters Pat ent No. 346, 052, issued to me July 20, 1886, and will be understood from the following description. A In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the fence-machine and the tension device set up in position for use, with several of the Fig. 2 is a detailed side view of the tension device. Fig. 3 is an end view, and Fig. 4 is a top view, of
Fig. 5 is a sidev view of the tight- The last four views are drawn scale than Fig. l.
In detail the machine' consists of an npright piece or frame-work, f, which provides bearings for the twisters t, through which the Wires w pass.
p is a pinion, having bearings in brackets b, bolted to the frame f, its teeth engaging with those of the rack-bar rb, which moves up and down along the side of the frame in guides g, and is provided with stops s, which limit its movement in either direction, these stops striking against the guides when the rack-bar is moved far enough up or down. The rack-bar is operated by a crank, cr, and engages with the teeth of the twisters in the same manner as shown in my former patent, reference to which is hereby made, and nothing is claimed herein for that part of the machine. l Y b are beaters for forcing the pickets up into the bight of the wires, in the usual manner.
The machine is mounted on rollers, so that it may be easily moved. At the bottom is a on a larger frame for gaging the upper end of the pickets, y
if desired.
The main difference between this machine and the one shown in my former Letters Patent consists in the stops s upon the rack-bar to limit its movement, as hereinbefore described. The tension device, however, is entirely different from that shown in my former Letters Patent. It consists of a framepece, fr, which is bolted to an upright piece, p2, which is in turn secured to a post, p. This frame-piece has openings o, through which the wires pass, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the outer ends of the wires being secured to any suitable post or tree at the startingpoint.
t is a tightener, consisting of a round piece of iron, having a bolt, b, connected thereto aud threaded to receive a nut, n, the bolt passing through an opening in the bottom part of the frame-piece fr, inV the manner shown in Fig. 2. By turning down the nut n the tightener t' is drawn down upon the wires w,
so as to increase the tension, and theV reverse' movement of the nut will release it. On the sides of the frame-piece are formed lugs l, these being at the rear portion of the frame, and they prevent any sidewise movement or twisting of the tightener t', so that it remains uniformly at right angles across the line of the wires, making the tension even upon both of the wires.
The device is simple, strong, and effective, and is easily adjusted to any degree of tension required.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure `by Letters Patent, is the follow-ing:
1. In a wirerfence machine, the vertical rack-bar rb, having teeth upon one edge engaging thetwisters t, and upon one side engaging the pinion p, and provided with stops s, 'in combination with the frame-Work carrying the twisters, and the guides g, against which the stops abut near either end, all combined substantially as shown and described.
2. The tension device composed of the framo-piecefr, having holes to permit the pas It witness whereof I have hereunto set my sage of the wires through the ends, and lugs hand this 10th day of March, 1887. Z near the central portion, the tightener t,
connected to a bolt, b, the latter passing L. C. LOWDEN. through an opening in the bottom plate, and
secured by a nut., n, on the underside, for tighb- Vitnesses:
ening the same, all combined substantially as C. l?. JACOBS,
described. E. B. GRIFFITH.
