FLYING TOY.

INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
. UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
JOHN M. RICHARD, OF NE\VARK, NE? JERSEY.
FLYING TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,201, dated June 21, 1887.
Application filed January 15, 1887. Serial No. 29:4,431. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. RICHARD, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Flying Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a light and amusing toy capable of being thrown up to a great height in the air and of being readily caught in its descent by the op erator, thereby adding to the enjoyment of its use.
It relates to that form of toy in which a propeller provided with a pendent shaft is rapidly rotated by a string wound about said shaft, and is made to rise out of a socket in a handle; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement ofparts hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecitication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention as arranged for operation, the holder being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the propeller. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the handle provided with an interior adjustable rest for the spindle of the propeller.
In carrying my invention into effect I con struct a handle, A, of any shape suitable for convenience in grasping the same, and I provide the handle with a central circular recess, (I, extending wholly through the handle.
The screw-propeller consists of a central hub, from which two or more angular blades,
C, project laterally after the manner of a common windmill. Any other suitable form of propeller wheel may be employed. In the center of the hub I attach a shaft, B, at right angles to the propeller blades. Said shaft B forms a pendent or guiding tail to the propeller-wheel, the construction being such that when the shaft and wheel are rapidly rotated the wheel will rise vertically in the air, the length and weight of the shaft serving as aguide or tail to keep the toy in a vertical position, and when the initial rotary motion of the wheel is spent the toy will descend, the weight of the shaft still keeping it in a vertical position.
The initial rotation of the shaft and wheel is imparted by means of a cord, 1), which is wound around thc'shaft, as shown in Fig. 1,
one end of the cord being passed through a lateral aperture, 0, in the shaft.
To operate the toy, the lower end of the shaft is inserted in the handle, the point of the shaft resting on the bottom of the recess a, as shown. The handle being held in one hand by the operator, and the cord being pulled by the other hand, rapid rotation will be given to the shaft and its blade, which lat ter, acting on theair, will cause the toy to rise in the air with the shaft B hanging vertically and serving as a guide or tail, as before mentioned. \Vhen the initial rotation ceases, the toy will descend, and may be caught by the operator by holding the cavity of the handle like a cup under the shaft, so that the latter will descend into the cavity of the handle.
It will be seen that my toy is provided with a handle in which the depth of the bottom of the cavity on which the spindle of the toy rests may be raised as required. In this bandle I- arrange an adjustable plug, E, which may be moved up or down within-the handle, according to the length of the pendent shaft or spindle B. The handle as thus made is adapted for use in connection with wheels or toys of various sizes having spindles of varying lengths. This constructionalso permits the setting of the spindle B at greater or less depths within the handle, as desired, by which the steadiness and direction of the flight of the toy may be readily governed.
' Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a lying toy made substantially as herein described, the same consisting of a bladed wheel and pendent guiding shaft, and a handle adapted to receive said shaft constructed with an adj ustable spindle, whereby the depth of the cavity may be varied as required, as set forth.
2. In a flying toy, the handle constructedv with an adj ustable spindle, as described, whcrcby the depth of the cavity may be varied as required, as set forth.
JOHN M. RICHARD.
