Abstract
An open flame gas burner has a body portion bringing the gas to a perforated tip. The top screws onto the body and clamps a bottom screen between it and the body extending in a plane at right angles thereto. The bottom screen is circular and two interfitted spaced inner and outer cup-shaped screen members over the tip are supported by the lower screen whose periphery is turned over to engage extending peripheral edges of the cupshaped screens.

The elements of the burner are so disposed as to baffle gusts of wind and prevent extinguishing ofthe flame.
Generally, the present invention relates to combustion with porous, capillary, particulate or sievelike flame holders in which woven wire screens hold the flame. Representative prior art patents are U.S. Pat. Nos. 2,96l,850; 3,219,025, and 3,391,683.
I SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It istherefore the object of the present invention to provide a novel windproof open flame burner for usein exterior domestic or public light fixtures or lamps comprising a body having a gaspassage therein, a tip having burner openings therein mounted on the body and receiving gas therefrom, a circular flat bottom screen clamped between the tip and the body and inner and outer spaced cup-shaped screens surrounding the tip and mounted on the bottom screen, the periphery of the bottom screen being turned over onto flat peripheral flanges of the inner and outer screens holding the assembly together. An ornamental cup may be mounted'on the body and extend upwardly and outwardly adjacent to and around the bottom screen.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters indicate like parts,
FIG. 1 is an elevational view, partly in section, of a preferred embodiment of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a view from above of the bottom screen and tip of FIG. 1 before assembly with the inner and outer screens; and
FIG. 3 is a partial sectional view of the bottom screen prior to assembly.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to the drawings, the body for the burner is shown at and has central duct 11 therein for the flow of gas to tip 12, tip 12 having burner openings 13 therein. Tip 12 is provided with threaded portion 14 received in threaded opening 15 in body 10. Body 10 may be threaded at 16 for connection to gas cock 17 which adjusts the flow of gas to tip 12 and thus regulates the size of the flame.
A circular bottom screen 18 has circular central opening 19 receiving threaded portion 14 to clamp screen 18 between tip 12 and body 10. Screen 18 has upturned peripheral wall 20,
FIG. 3, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
An inner cup-shaped screen 21 has a peripheral flat rim 22 which is received in screen 18 with screen 21 then spaced from and covering tip 12.
An outer cup-shaped screen 23 has a peripheral flat rim 24 which is received in screen 18 on top of rim 22 with screen 23 then spaced from and covering screen 21.
With inner screen 21 and outer screen 22 thus placed, wall 20 is then turned in on rim 24 at 25 and the burner is maintained in assembled condition.
An ornamental cup 26 may be secured between body 10 and cock l7 and extends upwardly and outwardly to surround in spaced relation the assembled screens as above-described. Cup 26 may be disposed to deflect upward drafts of air.
This embodiment is lighted by opening cock 17 to permit flow of gas through opening 13. The gas is lit by extending a flame adjacent outer screen 23 and a gas flame is formed extending u wardly and outwardly from tip 12.
It has een found that the arrangement of screens 18, 21
and 23 as above-described so baffle any currents of air or gusts of wind infringing on the burner from any direction as to prevent extinguishing of the flame even for wind velocities in the neighborhood of 30 miles per hour.
The size of the mesh for screens '18, 21 and 23 should be commensurate with the actual dimensions of the screens, screen 18 having an internal diameter of about 1% inches, screen 21 having an internal diameter of about nine-sixteenths inch and screen 23 having an internal diameter of twentyseven/thirty-second inch. A screen mesh from 36 to 24 mesh has been found to be acceptable and a mesh of about 30 with wire diameter of 0.012 inch is used with the embodiment of the invention described above.
